I beg to differ. Spinks did not catch the best of E. Davis who may have actually peaked years earlier but got his first big chance on Holmes-****ey undercard with 6th rd tko of Sutherland but ran into a still fierce D. Braxton in which he almost did not make it out of the 1st round. He gave a good account throughout the rest of the fight, turning Dwight's nose into a beanbag in rd six. It was a war and after 10 there was little left of Eddie. By age 34, he bore little semblance from two years before and I tell you what else; I scored that fight a draw over 12. the scoring was just terribly biased and yes, I if it came down to it, I would also pick Roy Jones over Mike - easy
I guess our definition of 'washed up' differs. Maybe Davis wasn't at his absolute peak, but he wasn't 'shot.' To me, 'washed up' means the same as 'shot.' I watched the Spinks/Davis fight live on CBS as well. I remember thinking Davis had won. He nullified Spink's power the whole fight. Gil Clancy and Time Ryan thought it was very close, if not a Davis upset win. Larry Hazzard and Joe Cortez, two refs. who basically never judged fights, somehow got the assignment to be judges for the fight and barely gave Davis a round. The only real judge had it razor close. Some other poster on here said earlier in this thread that Spinks wasn't 100 percent for the Davis fight. I have never heard that before. Of course, the poster gives no citation for that information. I read the reports of this fight in the Mags. at the time, and they didn't mention Spinks being at less than 100 percent, although I will note that a rematch with Dwight Qawi had fallen through (basically Dwight couldn't make 175 lbs anymore).
Eddie was 34 and got the tar beat out of him by Qawi. He seemed to be a leftover and got a title shot b/c no one was left
spinks cant stop hag, he would win a decision, hag was small even in his division, and spinks was huge for his division. its more like a LMW vs a HW, both top drawer, not jones vs ruiz.
Nah, He wasn't washed up when he fought Spinks. He was 32, not 34, and turned pro. at 24 yrs. old. KO rated him #3 Light Heavy for at least another yr. after the Spinks fight, until he lost to Marvin Johnson. He gave Qwai a good fight. He hit Dwight with uppercuts and provided Dwight with a stern test, after being floored in the first round. Saad was shot after losing to Qawi, Jerry Martin was shot after loing to Qawi, but not Davis. No way a shot fighter almost beats Spinks. You are also the only one in this thread, who thinks Marvin Hagler would beat Spinks. Marvin never had a fight above 160 in his career. He's not beating Spinks. I think you're saying Davis as shot, to lower the value of Spinks. Not buying it. And Davis lasted for over three more years and got a tiltle shot in '87 against Lalonde. He truly was shot by then.
