I doubt he rushes him like he did Tommy, even if that could potentially be his best bet on winning. I actually feel he might be a tad intimidated by the speed. Not scared, of course, just wary (and rightly so). He'd likely look to stay ring center and jab at Roy I think. Sitting back and focusing more on countering isn't going to win him the fight, and I'm fairly confident Roy would force him into the role of the aggressor anyway. He'd have to switch it up a lot, which he's certainly capable of doing. Jones was just such a phenomenal ring general in his prime, so difficult to pin down, and he's probably got enough power to keep Marvin in check. Hagler was as versatile as they come, but in the end, I don't feel he was dedicated enough a body puncher or quite adept enough a pressure fighter to really get to Roy as often as he'd need to. His best and most favored style was boxing on the outside behind the jab and breaking guys down like that, but what are his chances of doing the same to a peak Roy Jones? Not terribly great. So again that question of whether or not Roy hit his prime before he left for 168 comes up. An interesting point though is that Jones seemed to take a few late rounds off against Hopkins. It's possible, even likely that he did so because he knew he had the fight won by then, but it's worth mentioning I think. Over 15 I'd be more inclined to side with Hagler, though I guess that's unfair to Jones given that he never had to go over 12. Ultimately, I just feel Roy was the better fighter peak for peak, and he's the bigger man to boot. There's only little to suggest he could have handled a prime ATG at that stage of his career, but then there's really nothing to suggest he couldn't have, either. His relative lack of experience is enough to make me doubt my pick, but not enough to make me outright change it.
Jones only chance would be to run for 12 rounds and try and "win" a Decision. Hagler would show him no respect and would walk him down and would shatter that Glass Jaw in brutal and embarrassing fashion.
You've just made my point even better than I did, genius. A 'green' RJJ at 160, with a day of the fight weigh-in, would get assaulted by prime Hagler. He fought no one even a third as good as Hagler.
Your comments reflect the type of shortsided thought prevalent with todays so called fight fans. Hagler was first and foremost a very sound and tactical boxer puncher who could throw down when needed to win.Ala hearns vs. Hagler, Hagler vs. Anterfurmo. The only reason anyone would think Leonard beat Hagler was he tricked and ran all night and in his home town gat a decision. Just showed Leonards real character. Go back and really watch Haglers fights. He is the real deal.
A prime RJJ is faster and stronger than Leonard.. RJJ by UD...fact is Roy has enough power to make Hagler stop on his tracks.. yEAH.. agree that Hagler was a beast but I just dont see him winning against a prime Roy..He will get tag with more powerful bombs than the one he received against Hearns.
Jones could move and clown with him enough to anger Hagler and maybe take his head out of fighting smart like Leonard did but then again Leonard had to take some hard shots to win that title, could Roy
A proven drug cheat!!! Marion Jones was as invincible as you could come to in womens track and field!
No, he couldn't which is why the people who are pointing to that fight as the reason Roid would win are delusional. Roid's Chin is dried horse ****, Grade AAA China. Hagler would have walked him down and destroyed him.
