I think Marvin could stop him late but Rubin had a very good chin. I reckon its a competitive scrap for the first 2/3...with Marvin's skills giving him the edge in most rounds. Then I see Hagler starting to give Carter a bit of a touch up later on...maybe a drawn out beating like the Tiger fight..or maybe Carter gets stopped after taking to much punishment. Either way I say Hagler wins this 999 times out of 1000.
Hagler UD 10-5 This would be a fun matchup with some really heated exchanges but Hagler is definitely a notch above. I say Rubin makes it to the end but Hagler's jab, counter punching, and outside work would be the difference; he'd be busting Carter up by the championship rounds.
I don't think Hagler would have an easy time with Carter at all to be honest. Carter, when on form was a very formidable fighter, regardless of how angry some are about the way he was portrayed in that lame ass movie. The guy had thunderous power, and very good skills to boot. He was a boxer-puncher, not just a puncher or a brawler. I think he might match up better with Marvin than Dick Tiger would, despite the way their fight went. To be honest, I don't think Hagler would've been a dominant force in that era at all the way he was in his own. He'd have been one of the best around no doubt, and a title claimant at some point, but I just don't see how he could prove himself consistently a level ahead of the elite MW crop of the 50's and 60's.
Hagler would win by late stoppage. Unless 'The Hurricane' had Bob Dylan in his corner ! Hagler would get distracted in that case, but would still take it on points.
Is Rubin Carter allowed to bring a gun into the ring, kill some people and then try to pretend he didnt do it? If not then Hagler rips the murderer to peaces and stops him.
Strong post, but I do think that Marvin was proffessional, versatile and driven enough to exceed in any era, against any level of opposition (within reason).
I have to agree with this assessment. Marvin Hagler wouldn't have had an easy time with the middleweights of the 1950's and 1960's . Tiger, Fullmer, Giardello , Robinson and Basilio would all have given him tough fights. Judging Hagler on his first bout with Vito Antuofermo and a blown-up Duran is proof enough for me. Those fighters IMO don't compare to the aforementioned.
Hagler is a level above Carter, but Rubin was tough at his best, and Hagler would of known he was in a bout. Hagler WU10 (7-3)
To succeed no doubt, but exceed the rest? I just don't see it, and that's no slight on Marvin. I don't see any MW exceeding the rest in an era like the one Carter fought in (and the years prior).
I must agree with you guys. Carter would have been good enough to make the fight competitive, at least some of the time. But I haven't any doubt that the 'Marvelous One' would be too good for him and stop him late or win by clear decision.
