Marvin Hagler would of been 65-1-1

Marvelous Marvin Hagler was one of the best World Middleweight Champions in history, he too had longevity on his side with countless others. But I learned a long time ago it is the judges scorecard that matters, not my opinion. It's because public opinion does not go on the fighters record.

Even here in Philadelphia the Watts fight is considered a robbery. He beat Vito hands down and should have gotten the belt that night. Sadly he gave the fight away to Leonard.

At the time I too scored Hagler-Vito I a draw. Now I was younger and not as knowledgeable and haven’t revisited it, but I think it’s very clear that Marvin fought cautiously and was far from dominant while Vito the Mosquito kept plugging away.

I think Cosell was selling Vito all night for some reason. I've watched that fight about 3 other times besides the live broadcast and I still have Hagler by adleast 4 rds more like 5.

I think it was wrong on Cosell's part, but he was not known for impartiality, he commentated the Antuofermo vs Corro fight on ABC's Wide World Of Sports, from Monte Carlo, Monaco, on June 30 1979, he said that if Hugo had thrown a few more punches, he retains his title.

If Cosell had his way, he'd be Vito 'Tough Cookie' Anteforumo.

Just found a couple articles from 1975 that claimed that Owens deserved the win.

I think Hagler's 62-3-2 is a solid record, without trying to squeeze a little bit more out of the contentious results.

Long-time observers are clear on their views, regarding the more controversial verdicts and I don't think that, on balance, the SD loss to Leonard does Hagler's legacy all that much harm.

The only guy to beat a prime Hagler (and he really hadn't quite plateaued, at that point) was Monroe.

Well there you go Kev. At that career stage it meant little in the big scheme of things but per the topic it's quite pertinent. Gotta go both ways.

I might find the fact that Hagler was still sporting a haircut, when he fought Owens, more noteworthy.
