This content is protected When the name Hagler is mentioned i think of determination, certainly toughness, disipline as his attributes as a fighter. We know he was always a good technical boxer/puncher who could switch. His footwork alone i would say rarley gets mentioned. I would call it elite, not flashy in a dancing sense but he's killling people with his feet.
Subtle but effective. One of Hagler's most underrated attributes is his footwork and defense which was nothing fancy yet always balance and disciplined with the way he moved and parried punches and also the way he transitions between stances seamlessly.
Hagler's footwork was amazing. The way he could switch stances mid punch or mid combo is truly amazing. GOAT middleweight.
Marvin Hagler was not a tall Middleweight…but with his footwork…and a 75 inch reach ..it didn’t matter
People often don't understand what a technically sound fighter Hagler was ... the man was more than just a beast ... he is the classic boxer puncher ... and he was a puncher as well ... he could box and crush ... a true legend.
The realization that Hagler actually had excellent footwork sneaks up and smacks people in the face in a like manner to realizing the same about Joe Louis. Fast and flashy is too closely intertwined with most people's idea of "good", when it comes to footwork. Real boxing people know that's BS. It doesn't matter whether you're tap dancing like Gregory Hines on trucker speed or barely moving - the key is positioning. Are you always in position to a) not be cleanly hit or knocked off balance if you do get hit and b) get off your own well-leveraged offense? If yes, then your footwork is perfect.
It's sort of akin to how casuals will be impressed by double-end speed-bag drills, while real boxing heads know to ignore that insubstantial parlor trickery and focus on how someone looks working the heavy bag, shadowboxing, and sparring.
