I see that he only fought opponents who were not natural middleweights or had come up to the weight. Does this hurt his legacy, seeing as he struggled against some of them, or was he just past his peak? Was Hagler a natural middleweight?
The general consensus is that Hagler simply had no one left to fight. He'd beaten everybody. They had to find worthy opponents for him where they could. SRL was wise enough to wait it out until Hagler had lost just a little, enough to make him think he could beat him.
Where are you getting that he struggled? NOTHING! can hurt his legacy as the Baddest Muu****a on the Planet at that time. Just watch his 15 rd war vs the previous Baddest Muu****a on the Planet Duran (bet they can share some stories about Sugar Ray) The middleweights of his era were just as good if not better than those of today. http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=8684&cat=boxer
Simply not true. Aside from Duran, Leonard and Mugabi, Hagler fought every natural middleweight out there. In fact, early in his career he had so much trouble getting fights, he had to fight all the other guys that no one would fight guys like Bennie Briscoe and Willie Monroe. To say that he "only fought opponents who were not natural middleweights " is a total lack of any knowledge of Haglers career.
Nothing, I believe can hurt the legacy of Hagler. He legally changed his name to Marvelous Marvin Hagler. 12 title defenses, 62-3-2(52ko). Stopped Hearns in three rounds. Held world title for amost 7 years. He lost his passion for the sport after the Ray Leonard decision but I think he legacy remains intact.
Read the title before writing dude. atsch Struggled is the wrong choice of word true- I was mainly referring to the fight with Duran which some people felt he should have won more convicingly and were surprised that Duran was even going into the last 2 rds I know about his early career and how he was avoided and yes he is no1 bad MF
i agree. Sugar Ray was wise to wait it out on Hagler and he won a close decision. nothing to take away from Ray, but Hagler had slowed down considerably. Anyways no shame in losing to Ray because he was a one in every 20 years welterweight who's an ATG.
Hagler was not the same fighter vs. Ray Leonard. Props to hagler for retiring after that fight. Props to leonard for winning a fight he had no business winning (even though i had hagler winning the fight, leonard put together the perfect gameplan to appeal to the judges, the crowd, and his survival)
Yes he had an amazing ATG winning streak. And and he lost two fights in his physical prime against decent but far from great opponents. He was also heavily favored to KO Leonard who was inactive and not a natural middleweight and lost. The reason I say he was human is that here on ESB sometimes the myth is created that Hagler was totally unbeatable and that his win in any fantasy matchup (except against RJJ) is a foregone conclusion.
Yes but every defeat Hagler suffered is highly debatable, he was never truly beaten by any fighter and arguably was robbed in his first two losses and his loss to SRL is still highly debated today.
What myth is there? Hagler was unbeatable in that time..RJJ time, BHops time & Pav's time. Please dont forget that Hagler was a very superior boxer than anyone in his time. He just had the power to KO his opponents. Prior to the Mugabe fight I'd give Hagler the decision or late 12-15 rd KO over RJJ. (there must be thread on here regarding Hagler vs RJJ. I'll find it now)
