johnson the first one to capture the lightheavy title three times.is he whipping foster with his southpaw style?
now johnson could bomb that guy was ****ing horrific one hell of a fighter .. but foster had serious bone crushing power... it would all depend on how much johnson was willing to take .. how much abuse could he withstand to pull it out ...
I haven't really watched much of Marvin Johnson, but his track record reflects that he was suseptible to getting hurt when in there with big punchers. Young, up and coming versions of Saad Muhammad, Mustafa Muhammad, Michael Spinks and Lottie Mwalie were all able to get wins over him and most were stoppages. Based on what I've seen of Foster, what little I've seen of Johnson, and both men's records as well as outcome patterns, I'd say this looks like a mismatch on the surface.
Johnson probably gives Foster fitsw for four rounds, but in the seventh, Foster, being patient, sets him up for that Left Hook, and it's lights out for Marvin.
Marvin was a gallant warrior and champion, but he's in over his league here. Nasty body shots would take their toll. His stamina was vulnerable against resistant opposition. Didn't have ATG punch resistance. Yes, his power was sufficient to generate a flash KD on Bob, but when the mantis gets back up... BF's hook to the body would replicate the damage of EMM's own hooks downstairs. Bob Foster-Mike Quarry=Michael Spinks-Marvin Johnson, unfortunately for the three time titlist from Indy. Good while it lasts though. Marvin's participation guarantees that.
.................After the fight, Johnson was quoted as saying "Ow." Back to you in the newsroom, Bob.........
Foster by brutal KO within 5 rounds. Marvin was good, but he would have been wide open for Foster's devastating left hook.
Johnson was a ruff and tuff 175 pounder if there ever was one. He'd let Foster know he was in a fight.. But Johnson got hit---A LOT! That would be doom against Foster... Foster comes from behind to KO Johnson in rd. 7 with a series of power shots... MR.BILL
I saw Marvin spar regularly back in his prime here at the Indy PAL and while he had his strengths, I can't imagine any scenario where a fight with Bob Foster would've turned out well. I see the Spinks result happening even more quickly and decisively. Being that ol' Marv isn't exactly my favorite person, it's not a bad fight to imagine either.
Pops always comes to fight, but he was not quite on the level of other top tier fighters. He'd give a good account of himself until he gets caught and kayoed. It's no shame to have a mediocre chin. He just didn't have great recuperative power.
Out of curiosity, why would you surmise he was a bad guy? Understand if it's not something you'd like to divulge, but I always assumed (perhaps based on noting more than his ring bravery) that he was a nice guy.
