SalFan, he was my "coach" at the Indy Pal (along with Tom Prater). Took the money and did absolutely nothing with any of us team members, rude, dismissive, disinterested, and eventually ran into some legal snags with the whole deal and got fired. At least Prater (hvy who fought Holmes and Cooney) beat the %$*$ out of us in sparring and made an effort.

Didn't see him again until the early 90's until I ran across him at a local 7-11 on the westside near where he lives. The manager shook her head when he left. I asked her why she did that and she went on a lengthy rant about how he frequently cut the line and intimidated customers, was demanding towards staff, but also that they had known he was stealing dog food out of bags on the back aisle and loading his pockets with it. Seriously.

Champ Chaney, his manager/trainer, was a womderful guy and very astute and he always proclaimed loudly what a great guy Marv was, so who knows?

Wow...........disappointing to hear. Thanks for the anecdote though. I swear I read some place that he was a nice guy, but like you say, who knows?
