Long article on Marvin Johnson, including his amateur accomplishments. http://www.cyberboxingzone.com/blog/?p=13157
Galindez was pretty much done for. It was his 2nd to last fight. How much value that means to you might differ from mine. The Parlov stoppage is semi impressive. I checked him out, the highest he was ever rated in an ring magazine annual sense was 6th overall. Yes, I think Kovalev would win one of those three fights, with Spinks being the least likely. Kovalev beat Ward on my card ( your's too ), and Ward is greater than either man Johnson beat. Everyone focuses on Kovalev's power. He was also a fine boxer. But this is a head to head type fo match up. Johnson wasn't durable and he's facing the better boxer and puncher. I know how those type of matches usually go in upper weight boxing,
Just because he fought in a time you like and mostly lost to the best doesn't make him great. Johnson best wins were over a guy on his way out who wasn't a puncher and a 6th ring magazine rated guy on his best night, but okay sure, he'd bet Kovalev who for a while was the best light heavyweight in the world. I pick who I think wins, and back it up with facts. This is classic section full of guys who either don't appreciate modern boxing or scorn it, yet the poll is pretty close. Outside the ring, I think Kovalev is a bad guy. I used to like him, not so much anymore. In fact I hope he gets " nailed " by Gvozdyk.
I could name 15-20 non Russians the I would pick over Kovalev @175 pounds. M. Johnson simply isn't one of them.
