Marvin Stinson, 70's Philly Amateur & Pro Hvyweight.
Was popular on the Saturday & Sunday Wide World of Sports
coverage of amateur boxing, Sugar Ray Leonard era. Not much of
    a pro career.

In 1974, Philadelphia boxer Marvin Stinson traveled to Havana, Cuba for the world games and faced Teofilo Stevenson, losing a close decision in the finals. In 1976, he won the national AAU title. He went to the Olympic trials that year, a tournament that included future world champion Michael Dokes. Another future world champion who was a long shot from Tennessee named John Tate would eventually win the competition and represent the famed 1976 Olympic team. It was Marvin Stinson that Tate beat in those finals - by controversial decision. Prior to this meeting, the two had split their two previous bouts. Stinson remained in camp as an Olympic alternate. Pretty sure he was one of Holmes' main sparring partners (EDIT: Just saw that the article mentions that). Not sure whether he was exaggerating but Marvin once told me that Holmes actually invited him to attend his Hall of Fame induction and offered to get him a hotel room or something (SECOND EDIT: Damn, just saw that the article kind of alludes to that too!).

John Tate and Marvin Stinson fought quite a bit from May thru July 1976.

I looked it up and at the U.S. National Championships in May 1976, Stinson won a three-round decision over Tate in the Semifinals.

Then Stinson, Tate, Michael Dokes and Jimmy Clark competed against each other in the U.S. Olympic Trials in early June 1976. Tate stopped Dokes in the third round, Stinson decisioned Clark over three, and then Tate outpointed Stinson in the final.

Then, on June 26, 1976, Stinson outpointed Tate in their first Olympic Box-Off meeting. And on July 7, 1976, Tate outpointed Stinson in their second Box-Off fight to make the Olympic team.

It would be nice to see some of those fights. The Leonard-Bruce Curry fight is available in great quality on Youtube. That was the same day as the Tate-Stinson fight in the Box-Off that Tate lost. Maybe it'll turn up.

There are a number of Stinson's amateur fights online but mostly against international opponents. Stinson didn't come across as a very big person when he fought Jimmy Young. Maybe his physical stats were a little inflated.

I remember Stinson from some of his amateur fights. He seemed to have too slight a build to be a top professional from what I can remember.
