How would a fight between these two go down? Who would prevail and how? Marvis: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5oOaRA3Is8[/ame] Cooper: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCge8dtgyRU[/ame]
I think Bert Cooper would win by KO, if they were both in their best form. Did these two ever spar together ?
i to lean toward cooper the only thought i have is that if the fight were a twelve rounder and marvis could get past the 7th would cooper gas badly and let marvis steal a decision by boxing well in the last half of the fight
I always thought that there were a number of great fights that could have been arranged between Marvis Frazier and other good fighters from his era that never were. This would have been one of them. It is basically a battle between the punching power of Bert Cooper and the boxing and defensive skills of Marvis Frazier. Of course, they were familiar with each other, having both been products of Joe Frazier's gym and yes, they did spar many times. In a recent interview Marvis described Cooper as a "tough, tough fighter with great potential". As to how it would come out, I have to look at the records of each. Bert Cooper succumbed to numerous opponents, having lost over 20 times. Marvis, on the other hand, lost only twice in his pro career (against the two best fighters of his era), while beating many of the other top fighters of the 80's (Tillis, Ribalta, "Bonecrusher" Smith, etc.). Even with his switch to the "in your face" style of his Dad later in his pro career, Marvis Frazier still retained enough of what he learned from George Benton as an amateur to hold off Bert Cooper until Cooper punched himself out. Final result: Frazier in a unanimous decision. PS. Much of this is covered in the book about Marvis Frazier's life due out in early 2013. Information is available about the book at http://www.meetmarvisfrazier.com Thanks!
Marvis easy Bert’s biggest wins were Willie deWitt and Joe Hipp if you don’t count the Orlin Norris injury
I think Cooper stops Marvis. When right, Cooper was a very good and dangerous heavyweight. He could have accomplished much more than he did is he would have had his head screwed on right. He had natural power, a born puncher and was very tough.
Marvis could outbox him but if he tries to fight Cooper the dog comes out Cooper was a dangerous fighter anyone remember the Willie DeWitt fight? that fight went down hill for a pretty promising Olympic caliber fighter when he tried to punch with Smoking Bert Willie was convinced to finish law school an become a lawyer after that...Coopers early career saw him as a decent cruiserweight and the only time in his early career he was overpowered was against Foreman which was confirmation that the Foreman style was all wrong to fight Big George....Cooper had some life and death fights with some awfully good heavyweights Moorer, Holyfield, Mercer.....I see more than not Cooper stopping Marvis as I feel Coopers best shot was nearly as formidable as a single Tyson shot....
How did those sparring matches go? a friend of mine learned to fight in Fraziers gym while stationed their as a Marine John Delpino with only 7 amateur fights under his belt he fought the defending National GG 125lb champion Edwin "Pee Wee" Parker in a life or death fight and lost a split decision Parker had over 300 at that point he told me the sparring in Frazier's gym was tougher.
