..it's true. When you got a great evenly matched fight, with a title on the line, and a high level of skill you achieve something that MMA will never touch. Too many MMA fights end abruptly and/or snore fests, the only thing that makes fights entertaining these days is when both guys are just brawlers or lack skills and trade back and forth, or guys like Uriajh Faber who just go lights out the whole fight. These submission specialists are the worst, watching them tap guys out is boring as hell. Name one MMA fight that holds a candle to Marquez v Vasquez III?
I'm not, this is a boxing board. Just saying, after a fight like that, we don't even need to make the argument, the proof was left in the ring last night by Marquez and Vasquez. :hat
I don't mind Mixed Martial Arts personally. It's cool in its own way but I do think MMA can never produce the types of wars boxing has had. The reason for that is because the fights inevitably go to the floor where it becomes a submission grappling match...the pace slows. Some people get pissed when you point that out, but I don't know how you can deny that its true. I actually have seen some good MMA fights where the fighters were striking each other pretty good, but then the aforementioned happens and it becomes a pretty technical match where nothing really happens thats exciting (unless you are a practioner in Ju Jit Su or something like that). The common viewer wants to see people get beat up and knocked out. Submission work and all that is dazzling, but its often not exciting unless you know whats going on or practice it. I watch it sometimes, but I have seen it before back in the day when it used to be anything goes and they'd have mismatches style wise. Not many people also watched it back then (I had to rent the tapes at the local video store). I think if MMA wasn't such a fad at the moment the fan base would be a lot lower. I often hear little kids talk about it nowadays and its funny because when I was in middle school-highschool, I remember the thing to talk about was Pro Wrestling.
You are correct on that. Its interesting because my friend who is crazy on MMA rarely comes to me and says ''this match was unbelievable''. Things like klitschko vs Ibragimov happen A LOT in MMA in my opinion. Now that dosent make MMA worst then boxing, just less entertaining in my opinion. However if one truly understands ground work in MMA, i guess it can be entertaining because of all the technique involved. But that dosen't change the fact that you will never see David Beckham, Brad Pitt and a bunch of stars(im thinking here of Hatton vs Mayweather) to see a very high caliber MMA match because to the common eye, the pace is too slow.
Not just because the pace can be slow, but also how long do the matches usaully last? A lot of them end in less then 2 rounds. The Brock Lesnar Frank Mir match which was so highly promoted lasted under 2 minutes. I'd be very disapointed having to shell out all that money to see a match that short (same with 1 round knockouts in boxing, I feel let let down). I give them their due, their very good well rounded fighters, but the rules in their sport don't allow for fights the caliber of Gatti-Ward, Corralles-Castillo, etc. One thing though about MMA/UFC is that they usaully air more then 3 fights per event. Boxing could benefit from showing the undercard and not just the main event. Especially fights like the Duddy one.
Man has violence instinctively. Know why MA is so popular in movies? Because people like it. mma will always have a crowd, cos to alot of people, it represents combat with less rules than the others out there.
That's true and there is nothing wrong with martial arts, I like it myself. But UFC in particular just happened to explode over night. I remember years ago no one watched and it used to be crazier and more violent if anything with less rules.
