Oleg Maskaev and Sam Peter weighed in today in Cancun, Mexico in advance of their WBC heavyweight title clash on Saturday. Maskaev's weight of 243 lbs. was just 1/4 pound from his career high and five pounds more than he weighed when he defeated Hasim Rahman for the title in 2006. Peter's weight of 250 lbs. was the same as he weighed for his previous fight against Jameel McCline. The fight will be televised live in the United States in an HBO World Championship Boxing doubleheader (9:30 ET/6:30 p.m. PT) that also includes undefeated WBA, IBF and WBO lightweight champion Juan 'Baby Bull' Diaz taking on IBF No. 1-ranked mandatory challenger Nate 'Galaxxy Warrior' Campbell. Disappointing weights for both guys:-( By the way, good call on 250 KobeIsGod:good
Peter should never weigh more than 240 lbs. Maskaev is getting old and its tougher to keep th weight off. Peter just isn't serious at all ....
I could definitely see it going the distance. If somebody doesn't knock the other one out early or mid way in the fight, I think they'll be content to try and win rounds, boxing their ways to the final bell. Look for a dull fight if it goes to about 7 or 8 with not many punches thrown and both guys fighting in spurts.
Sam Peter is ruining his own career, I now am sure he will go for the knockout early, this a real disappointing weight for Samuel.
Brooklyn, Obviously these guys came in heavier than you would like, what would have been their ideal weights or weight range in your opinion?
Tough call It all depends on who has the better stamina and who can establish a jab. Maskaev is more technically sound than Peter and overall, more skilled. But Peter is younger and should have more energy. He might be a little quicker with single punches than the current Maskaev.
