Could Calzaghe do what Jones Junior and James Toney did and win the heavyweight championship of the world?
Well, the heavyweight division is dreadful at the moment, so maybe. He walks around around around 190 when out of training, so size wouldn't be an issue. Power would be though, as would chin.
But the question was if Calzaghe could duplicate what Jones did. Jones didn't beat Lennox Lewis. If Calzaghe could beat Makaev, it would be similar to Jones beating Ruiz. I think Jones had a mental advantage that Calzaghe would also have: Ruiz just had to win to not embarrass himself. The longer the fight went without Ruiz being able to do damage, the more Ruiz was embarrassed in a different way than if he had fought a real heavyweight. Like the high school bully getting beaten by a nerd. I think Ruiz was really messed up in his head by round five or six. I give Calzaghe a 50% chance, also because Maskaev fluctuates between impressive performances and terrible off - nights like few fighters at the top.
Toney and Jones didn't win the heavyweight championship of the world. They both beat a beltholder, but John Ruiz was no champion.
These threads are ridiculous. Wake the **** up people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is only one constant in this argument and it is John freaking Ruiz.....
I think he could beat Maskaev if he was on form and boxed him. It's a bit of a mute point though as Maskaev will likely lose to Sam Peter and Joe would be a fool to go in with a 250 lb heavyweight.
oleg maskaev regardless of what u may say, old, chinny, etc.. is a big puncher why in the world would calzaghe face him?... no i wouldnt give joe much of a chance even tho i am a calzaghe fan... he could beat a hw that isnt a big puncher, oleg would be the wrong guy for joe...
Calzaghe would have to avoid Maskaev's punches for 12 rounds, and I can not see that happening as Maskaev actually can box. One big punch and it would be all over for Joe.
Calzaghe couldn't go the distance with a monster like Peter, like James Toney did twice. Incidentally, Toney had that first fight won, it was robbery. JC is great, but he will NEVER be RJJ or James Toney. Toney's chin is GODLY, he defense is superb, and his toughness is probably umatched anywhere else. Jones has more natural athleticism and talent than maybe anyone who ever stepped in a ring. He won on pure speed and his ability to not get hit. Toney's performances were more impressive. Toney stood TOE TO TOE with Holyfield, Ruiz, Rahman, and Peter twice. He didn't get knocked down (except against Peter from a balance problem), and took a lot of big shots. NO WAY could Calzaghe do that.
Neither was Ruiz. Joe wouldn't have anywhere near enough power. He doesn't have one punch KO power at 168 let alone against a heavyweight. He'd get bullied at heavyweight or even cruiser by the top guys.
Joe I dont think has the power to keep big guy's off of him. I dont see him beating any Heavyweights.
Toney was great, sure, but he also lost legitimately to Thadzi, who had eight losses if I remember correctly when he fought Toney. The same Thadzi who was blown out of the ring by Dariusz Michalczewski. The losses against Griffin are highly controversial, but Griffin at least made it close fights, while Dariusz owned him and RJJ blew him out of the ring in one round when he was finally motivated to fight for real. Calzaghe destroys Thadzi/Griffin - level fighters easily. Calzaghe is easily on Toney's level H2H at 168 - 175. Could he hang with heavyweights? I don't know, but Peter is so slow, the speed difference would be bigger than between RJJ and Ruiz.
Easily but don't be fooled Joe isn't as stupid as Jones he won't put that weight on at the cost of his legacy should he fight on.
