Who would have won this glass cannon matchup? Let's say two fights one in the late 90s and the other around 2004 when Golota was having his last hurrah against Byrd and Ruiz.
I like Oleg slightly more. He was the mentally tougher guy with a brutal right hand. Too bad his chin wasn't great. All that said, you never really new what you were going to get with Golota.
96 Golota would stop any version of Oleg. Even though Golota was the biggest headcase in boxing history, fact is he gave a faded Bowe two beatings and ended his career. A faded Bowe is still 5x better than the best Maskaev. Oleg was never durable, and wouldn't handle the punishment Bowe took. Golota by TKO.
Golota was a sold boxer also with underrated speed and skills. He couldn't beat Bowe so how could Maskaev who was smaller , slower and more one dimensional? Oleg wouldn't be as hard to hit as Golota who slipped and bobbed n weaved extremely well for a big man. Credit where it is due , Golota was a very skilled big man in his prime.
They are close in skill but to me, Oleg beating a prime Rahman twice is more impressive that Golota beating a CTE fat Riddick Bowe. Don't get me wrong, Bowe was a far superior fighter than either of the guys we are talking about but by 95' Bowe was a shell.
I agree 100%. I still find Maskaev's career to be very puzzling. In those two fights with Rahman, he ate some huge shots and stood up to them but at other times in his career he would just get blown out like the Kirk Johnson fight. The guy was a solid heavyweight who at his best was pretty danm good.
Golota in his prime would outbox and probably stop Maskaev. He had far better ring control, crisper technique and better fight instincts. Maskaev was the bigger single shot puncher, and kind of underrated on the technical front too, but I think Golota was the superior operator here. Actually now that I think about it it's a closer fight than I initially envisioned. Oleg definitely has a chance, but it'll probably come late in the fight after he's trailing on points.
I don't think he would either , he would take the shots Golota wasn't prepared to take and lose to a Bowe who wasn't in crippling pain from combos belted to his nutsack. Golota couldn't take the return fire from Bowe. There's no other reason why he launched an all out assault on his gonads.
90s Golota would absolutely panel Maskaev. I don't fancy Maskaev's chances in 2004 bout, either, to be honest.
Oleg over Golota. Oleg had excellent boxing skills that under appreciated. He also had WAY MORE mental toughness that Golota could ever dreamed of having. There may have been others, but I have never seen a fighter overcome and rebound so many viscous KOs. I think Maskaev had better power than Golota. Here is a simple rule of thumb; Never bet on Golota in a big fight.
