A masterclass in my opinion can't be a close fight, it has to be a very one sided schooling, where a relatively good opponent is made to look absolutely ordinary. That'd be my definition of "masterclass".

 

Rigondeaux vs Donaire,

People were saying things like, Donaire was going to "knock Rigondeaux the **** out", and "Donaire is going to beat the **** out of Rigondeaux" among other ludicrous predictions. Not bothering to even take a look at past Rigondeaux fights to see what he had. Also not realizing that although Donaire was considered pound for pound, he had been carefully matched for a few years by that point. He had never faced a guy with Rigondeaux's skill and calmness under fire. Donaire had at least three inches in height and also reach on Rigondeaux, as well probably 15 pounds in weight. It didn't matter. Rigs gave him the dreaded pumpkin face, in a beautiful show of counter punching, and defensive elusiveness. Making it even more impressive, is that Rigs moved the way the opponent wants a southpaw to move, and turn, and it didn't matter. Rigs got the better of it from the outside, and the inside, even standing in with Donaire and punishing his face. That was some high level stuff.

Even though the kilted wonder elevated his game (digging deep and pulling away late) to overcome the closeness and ultimately put the difference-making flourish on what most would agree is an overall masterful performance to secure the W?

Honestly, I got both of their career sets but I haven't got around to watching their fights yet so I really can't comment. But no, most likely not if I go by what you and others have described the fight to be like.

It's subjective anyway and there is no right or wrong answer in this.

It's obvious you didn't know what a masterclass was exactly and now feel silly because I exposed you. If people on this forum don't want to accept the true definition of what a masterclass is that's up to them. I know what a masterclass is and will not accept fights that don't meet the criteria being labelled as 1.

The rematch was more one-sided but I wouldn't deem it a masterclass as it didn't really need to be one given how much the former champ had fallen off in just a year.
