According to ESPN, the deal is almost done, so let's get down to the facts quickly:

    - Date: October 18
    - TV: HBO PPV
    - Venue: Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City
    - Weight: 170 lbs

I think it's a very good and a pretty bad fight at the same time. It's good because 2 P4P-ers will fight, Hopkins is a lot bigger name than we've expected for Pavlik and it's a real test for the young fighter. But it's gonna be as bad as any Bernard Hopkins fight, 170 favors him, the style heavily favors him and if Hopkins wins (which I for myself expect), it KO's the excitement for the Pavlik-Calzaghe or the Pavlik-Abraham fights - Kelly MUST win this one, and win big - and that's what Calzaghe failed to do, even if he's got the win.

Forget winning big. Pavlik just needs to get by Hopkins. I don't consider that Pavlik will be capable of proving his superiority, so he just needs rounds in the bank.

    That is all.

One thing is sure though, Pavlik ain't going to knock Bernard out. At best he can get an UD in a close fight (just like everybody who won against Hopkins).

I think HBO believes Pavlik can win this big and then sell big fights with Calz and Abe

until what age does hopkins want to fight? i can't decide on the winner yet since pavlik is going up on weight (10 lbs at that) and while bhop might own the weight, he doesn't have the age.

If Pavlik doesn't knock BHop out then it will be a boring, ugly fight and will do nothing but hurt Pavlik's reputation. After Kessler, Calzaghe was riding high off of a beautiful victory. After Bernard he is perceived as boring and ineffectual. Calzaghe is the same fighter he always was and is being judged strictly based on the kind of fight Hopkins wanted. Nobody wins against Hopkins, everybody loses. Even if you get the W.

pavlik is an easier style than calzaghes...calzaghe fights at a much higher tempo and punches from different angles pavliks more of a 1-2 fighter easier for bernard to figure out

Just the fact the we still think a 40 something can beat a 20 something...
Proves to eveyone what Bernard Hopkins is made of in the ring.

    Good observations, all correct.

Here's the thing though - Pavlik hits very hard, he is a hear-breaker and a hurtful puncher. If Hopkins can't consistantly make proper angles of the line, he is going to be getting hurt. At his age, can he proccess that hurt?

Hopkins is going to fall off after about 5 rounds. Can he still bank rounds after that, and how many of the first 5 will Pavlik have banked on the work-rate and aggression?

I haven't considered this one properly yet, but my knee-jerk is that Hopkins losses another close decision (I had Calzaghe up by a point).

This will be a tricky fight for Pavlik, will he be technically good enough to adapt to Bernard's style? - Time will tell
