Mastering a certain style of boxing- let's break down the technical factors

I thought you was Addie for a second.

But do you get my point where Monzon strayed from the norm he didnt leave gaping weaknesses, that is just as effective as technical perfection IMO and helps in mastering a style, call it alternative textbook basics, someone like Mayorga is just not even nearly effective because of his gaping flaws.

 

Ok then we are agreed, and I have went off in some tangent, as usual with you.

Nah, its no a knock at you, I dont think. More other people who critsize Monzon for lack of technical skills.

 

Great thread this. Haven't found anything to really contribute with, but great thread all the same.

 

It's a jibe at me most likely.

Although McGrain did once claim that he thought Monzon could be the most technically faultless fighter ever. And now he's covering his arse...

 

It was a poke at everyone who disagreed with my viewpoints, as I'm always right.

 

I'll have a go:

Tyson as a swarming boxer-puncher (how's that for narrow category?).


Headmovement: Pretty basic but effective. He moves his head side to side instead of a bob and weave in order not to expose himself to too many uppercuts.

Guard: Hands held high, often in a peek-a-boo guard. Since his short stature and forward leaning stance guards him against body shots he can afford a high guard.

Footwork: Very good for his chosen style. He's good at taking short steps in rapid succcession without losing balance, which allowd him to close space quickly and also cut off the ring, which he does very well.

Punching: His strongest aspect. Throws great text book punches and puts them together very well in combinations. Good enough to throw unusual combinations like a right hook to the body followed by an uppercut to the head. Very good at combining punches to the body and head. Also has a very good jab. He jumps it in very well to make up for his short reach, often to the chest. It sets up his other punches rather than doing much damage on its own.
