What do you think about tough matchmaking? As a fight fan? As a promoter who wants to make a lot of bucks with his boy? As a matchmaker who wants to increase the level of opp slowly but steadily? High risk, high reward? High risk, little reward? According to the news there are three truly amazing upcomming heavy weight fights on the undercard of Sylvester's undercard in january 2010. Rorbert Helenius(10-0) will take on Lamon Brewster(35-5),his stable mate Kubrat Pulev(4-0) will face Oleg Platov(28-1),and German heavy weight talent Edmund Gerber(9-0) will square off against Rene Dettweiler(26-2). Bloody tough matchmaking, isnt it! Pure madness? Stupid? Good matchmaking? Your thoughts? Lets take into consideration that someone like Johnson who hasnt fought any big name will challenge Vitaly Klitschko in a couple of hours! Johnson has fought limited opposition, but gets a shot at a world title. Is it really wise that a pro game rookie like Pulev will face a fighter in his 5th pro fight who is better than any opponent Kevin Johnson has ever faced up to now? Another example: Odlanier Solis beat Ukranian olympian Mazikin is his second pro fight. Mazikin was a very experienced amateur fighter and also a relatively experienced pro fighter whereas Solis knew **** about the pro business. Irrespective of the fishy outcome of their encounter, was it truly good matchmaking to match this young fellow with someone like Mazikin in his 2nd pro fight? Or Pulev s Platov? Your thoughts, guys? Whats your approach to matchmaking?
johnson fought timor!!!!!!! his first ten fights where quite tough, only his last couple he slacked off to preserve his rankin
He did,but Timur is a limited b fighter who cant hold a candle to Pulev's foe Platov,or to Helenius' foe Brewster(even at this stage of his career). Timur more or less plays in Dettweiler's league IMO. Johnson was praised for his convincing victory over Devin Vargas, but Vargas was a small heavy weight with no pop in his fists and a shaky chin. Anyone remembers his encounter with Zuev at the olympics? Zuev knocked Vargas down several times -with headgear and a supercautious ref behind his back. Pah! If a victory over Timur is worthy of getting a title shot, then Pulev must get an imediate shot at Vitaly after he has beaten Platov. Pulev challenges Vitaly in his 6th pro fight.Hm!:huh Pulev is truly travelling on the fast track.
I think you're greatly underestimating just how shot Brewster is at this point. He really sucks now. Still an aggressive fight for someone with only 10 fights, but he's a step back from Bidenko.
I dont know, brickhaus! Nobody calls Tua shot though he barely managed to beat Robert Hawkins. Gbenga upset the apple cart and outpointed Brewster, but it was a close fight which could really have gone either way. Gbenga is a small heavy weight, not the most speedy one out there, but too fast for Lamon that night............. at times. Lamon can still punch. Tua is all of a sudden in the mix again..........after he has beaten that limited New Zealander Cameron. I am not really sure that Brewser is truly that shot. He has a contract with Sauerland, and Sauerland and his matchmaker dont seem to think that highly of him anymore. Otherwise he wouldnt be matched against Helenius who is on the rise and a potential star in the making. Brewster still has a big name and a good reputation.I can see which way the cats jumps and how Sauerland and his team think, but Brewster doesnt deserve to be a kind of amplifier who plays to Sauerland's tunes and indirectly blews the trumpet of Sauerland's young guns. Well,he always has a puncher's chance to turn the tables. Maybe Helenius will learn a new lesson as he seems to be a dilligent pupil in the paid ranks
I know it's de rigeur to bash promoters, but if Brewster can't win that fight, why would he continue in the sport? This sort of traditional crossroads fight is part of the sport - if matchmaking shows where each guy is and manages to be competative, that's good matchmaking. I think comparing Tua and Brewster is off base. Brewster has taken a number of beatings and had major medical problems and has never been the same since. Tua just needed to get in shape and properly motivated. Two very different scenarios. That Pulev fight, though... wow, that's aggressive. I don't know the guy, but I do know Platov and that seems like a crazy decision.
