Promoters are so hung up on extracting as much money as they can for as long as they can that they avoid fights that fans are clamoring for. And what these promoters fail to understand, it would seem, is that the biggest and best fighters don't create necessarily the most interest or the best fights. A great example is an Arreola-Kownacki fight. Neither fighter is at the top of the division and probably never will be. But there is a real interest in Kownacki right now because of the way he dispatched bigger fighters recently, like Gerald Washington. The Mexican fans love Arreola. The Polish fans love Kownacki. This is a boxing fan's fight. Both fighters would be coming forward looking to take each other's heads off. But, no, this fight probably won't happen because the hope is Arreola will get a bigger payday fighting Wilder. BS. Arreola and Kownacki and their fans will sell out just about any venue. There are so many great fights out there just waiting to happen if these promoters would just make it happen. Spence-Crawford is another one. Loma-Garcia. Hurd-Charlo. Canelo-Benavidez. It goes on and on. They think they are being so smart by waiting and "letting it marinade" as they say. Baloney. These guys would make so much more money if they would give the fans what they want. If they made these happen one after the other the results would just lead to more great fights. Fights that aren't even contemplated currently, not until results are in from the other potential great fights. They could catch lightning in a bottle if they would just move on some of these fights NOW.
I feel like too many fighters and promoters have seen how financially successful Mayweather was and think that as long as you maintain that 0 and pick your fights well then you can market yourself to something close to that level. So taking risks when you're approaching/at your prime is not worth it for these guys. Great example- Golovkin, he's super man one minute, loses once now the buzz has gone. Boxing is a stone cold business, it's a short and dangerous career and as fans, we're naive to think that boxers should risk their health and financial future for acclaim and status from hardcore fans. The money's with the casuals. I'm not saying I like it but it's the way it is.
Artur beterbiev is a great example. Being brought along do slowly, it's been dreadful following him. I'm basically rooting against him Everytime out.
They are both young. Just because it can't happen right now under these circumstances, doesn't mean it won't or couldn't happen down the line. Either way, still sucks we won't see them in the immediate future.
Crawford wants it. It's just Spence is looking for other things in my opinion. Undisputed means more to crawford than it does to Errol Spence
Here is how I see things. Boxing is extremely secular. The main goal of all these camps is to make the most amount of money. I don't care who it is, that is the goal. Maybe not every single fighter feels that way, but every single promotional company does. What is best for boxing, is rarely what is best for each individual camp at that point in time. The financial game of boxing has to be so completely different than other sports due to the heavy reliance on individual investors, and the desire yo provide the biggest return.
Yup. Crawford is a boxing junkie, a fan. He is always at the fights just to be there. Legacy in the sport seems maybe more important to him. With that said I have no quarrels at all with Spence. Seems like a pretty good fella to me.
I agree man... At the end if we don't get crawford-spence I want to see crawford fight Porter or thurman.
Completely agree. What a tragedy Beterbiev's career has been. At one point his potential was limitless. Never fulfilled.
This is how boxing today differs so much from the days of Ali, Robinson, the 50's, 60's and 70s. All of those guys had losses but it didn't diminish their stature. It was expected. You are going to lose sometimes when you are always fighting, both good and great fighters.
On the other hand look at Kosei Tanaka his team have matched him perfectly raced to titles and netted him big fights
I would rather say not lost but unneeded art... If promoters are able to sell mismatches why would they risk throwing their fighters against the best? Even if those best are also with that promoter.
