I recently came across his name after not even thinking about him for years. He fought in the tough mid to late 70s lightheavy division and even managed a victory over the terrific John Conteh. Thoughts? Impressions?
One of Croatias most famous sportsmen. He's considered the treshold for all of our boxers. Great guy too.
Many of his fights are on youtube. He had a standup, somewhat ameteur style. He threw quick fluries, held, generally tried to break his opponent's rythm. He did not appear to have anything above average punching power He was well guided after winning an Olympic gold in '72. He lost to a still green Matthew Franklin in 1976 in his home base of Italy. The Conteh fight was very close, and it could have gone either way. Conteh was past his peak at that point Marvin Johnson punished and walked through him. He was a good fighter but nothing special in the loaded Light Heavyweight division of the mid to late '70s.
He wasn't, he and his corner cheated when he fought Conteh, he came in the ring with layers of plastic skin on his eyebrows and should have been made to remove it. He is a CHEAT.
I still find it incredible they were allowed to get away with that, like coming into the ring wearing a jaw protector. Not the only time Conteh was hard done by in that fashion. The other was the first Saad fight when Saad's corner were pouring what looked like tarmac onto his cut.
I have a thread about something like this a few years back. I think it was Lauro Salas and Salas had on patches over his eye. I wonder...
****ing hell. I remember those fights but none of the extracurriculars you guys are mentioning. Reality is even the past prime Conteh was terrific. Didn't know he was done like that. Thanks lads.
That sh!t makes you have rocks in your head crystallizes the blood in your cut and if it gets in your eyes it can blind you.
I remember that when he came into the Conteh fight with all that plastic skin on his eyebrows. At the end of the day though he was a good fighter and a top amateur as well. I thought conteh won the fight myself but it was a tough fight and I wasn't surprised when he got the decision over there.
