How does that knock him out of the ATG top 10? I'd understand if Hughes was 10 and Penn was 11. Both including GSP are in the ATG top 10 without a doubt no matter what happens.
I don't have an ATG top 10, but if I did I'm sure to put Penn, GSP and Hughes in there, for achievement alone never mind their skill. Any official ATG top 10's that might appear have to have these three.
You guys talking WW or MMA Total?? I'm not a huge Hughes fan so I can see him being removed from the top 10 ATG list for all of MMA, but for WW he is still #2 ATG.
Not because of anything Hughes did though. They were exciting because GSP was absolutely destroying him and treating him like he didn't even belong in the same cage as him.
Skill wise, he didn't. I damn near cried tears of joy when GSP submitted him by armbar at UFC 79. The irony was just...oh, so beautiful.
Wand? ...Really? I mean I love the guy, he was a beast in his prime, but he wasn't exactly unbeatable. Otherwise, solid list. True. But Hughes' fights with Trigg were much more exciting than anything GSP has produced. He makes good points, GSP's a different fighter now he has the title. There's no urgency. It's a different kind of hunger.
Wand is a sentimental pick but that doesnt take away from the fact that hed always be a top 10 atg sentimental pick for alot of people. Hes a memorable fighter.
So is Hughes in my eyes. If you were to make a chart of evolving for welterweights, it probably starts with Gracie, then Hughes, then GSP. It's probably a lot more evolved than that but those are the three superstars. Not only was Hughes' reign amazing and his record brilliant, he had some serious skills that still keep him relevant today. Infact, Matt Hughes would still be in the top echelon if not for GSP, along with Penn and Alves on a good day.
Again its not only skills you need to talk about but fights, this is after all a sports entertainment business. There is value when a fighter says I want to give the fans a good show (Wand, Pacquiao) because thats whats its all about. Although Hughes had some memorable fights, there is no one more exciting/destructive fighter than Wand in his prime and up to now. Resume wise Hughes edges it a little bit because he won more but Wand is the De La Hoya of MMA, he lost some big fights but he fought them all.
I think so too. I still can't deny I'd like to see those fights though and wouldn't count out Hughes, especially if he were a few years closer to his prime.
