BEDFORD bear Matt Skelton is set to box in his home town for the first time as a pro when he headlines a bill at the Bedford Corn Exchange on Friday, May 18, writes Mark Wood.

The evening is being staged by Luton’s Shamrock Boxing in conjunction with Dennis Hobson Promotions and will feature a number of up-and-coming young Luton fighters, including 29-year-old Bulgarian Olympic bronze medallist Bobby George, real name Boris Georgiev, now based in the south of the county.

Skelton said: “My understanding is there’s a few up and coming boxers from Luton.

“There’s a young lad Bobby George and they’re trying to get some supporters for him and up his profile.”

The 45-year-old is hoping to reward the Bedfordians who have followed his career and supported him all over the world.

He said: “I fought in Bedford when I was kickboxing.

“It’s the first time I’ve boxed in Bedford which will be nice for me and hopefully get a few supporters.

“Over the years I’ve had a lot of supporters travel far and wide which I really appreciate.”

Skelton’s adamant he daren’t lose his six-round contest, saying: “I had a win against Tom Dallas and now I’ve made a deal with another promoter to have three more fights.

“The main aspect here is I don’t lose.

“They are looking at three different opponents.

“They have to be okayed by the boxing board, that’s why it’s yet to be named.”

Victory would improve Skelton’s record to 27 wins from 33 fights.

With Martin Rogan soon to take on Tyson Fury and Sam Sexton set to fight David Price, he hopes to fight one of those four in a big domestic bout in June with reclaiming the British heavyweight crown still his main ambition.

He added: “Hopefully I will be able to get in the mix with one of those four fighters.

“I’ve got to sit and wait and hopefully get the right fight and get back up there.”

    ---
I'm not sure what more he can hope to achieve in the sport, but good luck to him :good

Always liked Skelton and he deserves one last go. Fights with Rogan, Sexton, McDermott and even Audley are interesting fights.

Right, so he's too scared to fight Towers and Audley in front of home crowds, but he fought Chagaev in Germany for the world title and took a few rounds off him...

And actually ITV lost boxing after FW went to Sky for more money...

I honestly could never stand Skelton. His ugly, mauling, fouling style was just a monstrosity and to think he twice got primetime slots on ITV to stink the joint out.

Watching Rogan stop him was a wonderful moment.

Skelton is on my list of boxers who have actually over-achieved!

FW jumped ship to another channel, but I think it was Setanta then Sky.

    He does this.

It does say in the article that he wants Towers/Fury/Rogan.

Yes we do have a cinema, yes it is boring and yes there will be plenty of people drawn in by it (not me).
