Bruno was bigger but in this case I don't see his size doing him any good. I think the skill disparity is too much. Witherspoon who beat Bruno would probably be like 212 or so were he in the sort of shape Breidis is in. Realistically though some of Usyks cruiserweight wins would have been top 10 heavyweights in the 1980s and would have been hyped as good wins for Tyson had they fought him.
I cannot help but think my Granddad was right when he said: "It won't be long before Muhammad Ali will be considered too small to compete with today's Heavyweights." I would add that Joe Louis will also be considered too small. I am not at all sure that The Cruiserweight Division, and now The Bridgerweight Division, are really good for boxing.
Your grandad was very wise and correct imo. The saving grace for Joe Louis was that he did in fact take down HWs equal to or closely approximating to the so called SHWs of today in terms of size. Joe also took those HWs down in dramatic and convincing fashion. Of course the main argument will be the SHWs of today are more skilled. That contention has been delved into a number of times. Without necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with that view - at least we (or at least I) know that IF Joe can reasonably connect, he can seriously hurt/drop/stop almost anyone - size notwithstanding. With Joe’s hand speed and immaculate executions, size of the opposition notwithstanding, I think it far more likely than not that Joe will be able to connect.
