The Hilton who beat Drayton would've fit in nicely at 154 in recent years I think with the likes of Vargas, Old Hoya and Shane, Margarito, Williams, Martinez, young Alvarez etc. Some interesting varied fights to be had with him involved.

Goes down with Tony Ayala Jr as a 154 lb fighter who wasted incredible talent
and never fulfilled their potential. Both fighter had patriarch fathers who
seemed to doom their sons. Both fighter grew up too fast and consequently
paid the price. Mathew Hilton after won the title went down fast from drinking
    and wild approach to life.
At present Mathew Hilton is on welfare and the father and the other brothers are
best forgotten for the hideous crimes they committed.

    That's an exaggeration.

Hilton was too limited to ever be "great"... if he had more discipline.

What do you think his ceiling was? Do you feel he was something of a "hype job" sort of fighter?

No, I wouldn't say he was a hype job. He had a certain style that could have done well against some guys, but he also had limitations that were bound to be exposed by others.

I think it would make the most sense to speculate how he'd fare against the current crop of 154 pounders, since the division is very hot right now. It would be very interesting to see him up against guys like Lara, Hurd, and Charlo. Given his punch, I wouldn't count him out against those guys, but Lara admittedly would probably outclass him.

I know Sadam Ali currently has a belt at 154... Hilton would have destroyed Ali.

I don't see Hilton beating Canelo, but he'd give Canelo a pretty good tussle... but ultimately would be outclassed and beat up.

I don't see him doing well at all against Golovkin.

Or Russell, we can speculate how Hilton would fare against a man who held another belt at 154 at the time... Julian Jackson.

All I can say is... that one wouldn't have ended well for Matthew.

Probably would have ended with Hilton being ferried out on a stretcher, honestly. Everything about that match screams Jackson by KO.

He was a wreaking machine at his peak- he was powerful for his weight class and had an iron chin along with pretty quick hands .
He would balloon up between fights to around 180 pounds and sometime higher.
When he won the title he was even worse between fights with his weight .
His biggest problem was also his dad- honestly he should have never fought Hines as he was injured going into that bout and that fight ruined him.
I laugh when people call him overrstef - he would have wreaked most at Jr middle.
Doug Dewitt was a middleweight contender who was known for having a soild chin. He was once asked who hit the hardest he had fought and without hesitation he said Hilton had scary power. This is a boxer that faced a prime Thomas Hearns.
Hilton could have been an all time great .

That's the oldest trick in the boxing book. When fighters are asked who hit them the hardest, they'll ALWAYS respond with a guy they beat.

Dewitt can say whatever he wants... what Nigel Benn did to him definitely does not suggest that Hilton hit harder.

Hilton is being overrated in this thread. In no way could he have been an "all time great." Based on WHAT? Winning a 15 round war with the "legendary" Buster Drayton?

The poster who called him a poor man's Tony Sibson was accurate.

He knocked Benitez head off .
He hit hard and he went to the body rather well.
He would have knocked Jackson out- he took a hell of a lot better punch then Jackson did .
    Canelo? Don't make me laugh.
Lara I could see outboxing him
GGG I think would stop him .
Hurd no. Charlo not sure .

I hate Canelo, but I don't know what's funny about suggesting Canelo beats Hilton. Canelo is way better defensively than Hilton was, and far more skilled in general.

What's funny is suggesting that Hilton beats Jackson. There's no fighter as hittable as Hilton that's surviving Jackson.

Julian was a better technician than Hilton in general and would have outboxed him, then laid him out cold.
