Both of them are hard hitters in the midddleweights. So, who is more underrated? I think Sosa. He had a great fight with Toney, an explosive 1st round with Roy & wars with charles williams (lost a controversial decision the first one and won by KO the 2nd). He also had good fights with Frank Liles, Thomas Tate, Michael Nunn, Tony Thornton & Glen Johnson who was (32-1 at the time). He even became the first man to stopped a journeymen named Lenzie Morgan (who was known for his toughness) convincingly and with guys like sparred Michael Watson and broke his cheekbone, what a punch. He had better punching power than Hilton. Roy, Toney & Frank said he hit the hardest. Despite all of those achievements, he is still remain relatively unknown. Both were good punchers who were involved in action fights, but I don’t think either of them gets enough mention to be overrated nor underrated. But to answer the thread topic, I’ll go with the guy who both Roy Jones Jr and James Toney cited as the best puncher they ever faced: Sosa. You get votes from those two, I’m not going to try to veto them lol.
Toney said Sosa hit him high on the head and he was seeing triple for three rounds. Roy Jr said Sosa missed him with a punch and it almost buckled his knees … if it had landed “it would have been different.” Said he decided he’d better get Merqui out of there after that.
I think it was Liles who said Sosa’s legs handicapped him in the ring — he was knock-kneed — but that it actually helped his power and especially noted the way it played into him loading up on that right. Dude could bring it. I don’t remember anyone ever saying being in the ring with Sosa was a pleasant experience, haha. I’m also reminded of the time someone was on the Howard Stern show and mentioned their fight with Merqui Sosa and kind of mumbled his first name. Stern: You fought a guy named ****** Sosa??!!??
