Good close fight. I think it would be best for these two to split two fights. Johnson outboxes Saad in the first one, and Saad outslugs him in the second.

Back in the 70s and early 80s Saad often fought the same guy twice (Wayne McGee, Mate Parlov, Marvin Camel, Marvin Johnson, Yaqui Lopez, John Conteh).

In all fairness so did a lot of light heavyweights, Galindez fighting Rossman twice, Alvaro Yaqui Lopez twice, Richie Kates twice. My guess is that rematches were in big demand my friend. Carlos Monzon fighting Emile Griffith, twice, Monzon fighting Jean Claude Bouttier twice.

you have a point there; boxing used to really thrive off of those rivalries before the 90s rolled around, now they're anamolies

Saad was a warrior for sure. Stepping back in the ring with Dwight Braxton after that first beating took guts

yep, it took guts, but no wisdom; he should have faced off with some B level fighters before he got back in w/ Qawi, thought I don't think he would be able to beat Qawi anymore at this point

I wonder if those fights permanently wrecked him. He was only around 27 or 28 years old when he fought Qawi and yet he never beat a quality fighter again. In fact he started losing to journeyman. Sad way for a great champion to finish his career

He started to show wear and tear in his title defense against Jerry The Bull Martin prior to his title loss to Dwight Muhammad Qwai in 1981

Yeah well I wonder if those Qawi beatings made it worse

Mind you, the Martin bout was right before he lost to Qwai. After that bout, I began to think that he was prime to lose his next fight, which he did to Qwai, but you are right, the beating from Qwai made it worse for the next time they fpught.

Ya, tragic in fact, esp. the way he just laid everything on the line to win in the most dramatic fashion possible.

He actually belted out Pete McIntyre in 2 rounds in between bouts. He was probably just at the stage really. No amount of bouts was going to get him over Dwight. Tho he was tired and worn i'm not overly sure he'd beat Dwight at any stage. That's not a knock on Saad - Dwight is one helluva fighter and matches up nicely against Matt.
