I know this might not be fair....But I like this match -up. Good fighter vs. Great fighter. Can King Carlos withstand the late round surge?
Sadd beat a lot of really good lightheavy's during the 70's. Monzon had the chance to move and challenge various lightheavy champs during that period and chose not too.....which should tell you something. Sadd is as big, and probably stonger than Monzon which would neutalize Carlos' strengths. Sadd by UD and maybe a flash knockdown of Monzon late in the fight.
Actually, if you're very familiar with the timeline, you know that Bob Foster was light heavyweight champ for pretty much the entire time Monzon was on top at middleweight.
Looks like a prime to aging Bob Foster, plus Vincente Rondon, Victor Galindez, and John Conteh all held some version of a lightheavyweight title during the time from 11/70 to 7/77 when Monzon was middleweight champ. The ball was in Monzon's court, but he never stepped up. He just kept on crushing middleweights.
No way MSM destroys Monzon...Carlos just is to good a ring general and too tough to get blown out by just about anyone even Franklin. If a prime Monzon stepped he could certainly be competitive, really hard to say how he does overall. I would think he would be hard pressed beating MSM in the end..MSM wasnt champ until a year or so after a 35 year old Monzon retired, that version doesnt make it to the final bell I would say. But matching a 72-73 Monzon against a 1980 MSM would not be a one-sided blow out.
BIG DEE HERE= Monzon by 15 rd dec or late rd stoppage as he would box Muhammad`s head off and cut him up with his jab. Muhammad can win because of his ability to withstand enormous amount of punishment and his great punching power but Monzon was a very smart fighter. He would keep his chin out of the way and pound Muhammad to a win.
Damn, this thread is so old...I figured it was buried six feet under, I guess maybe it was only four...
I'll never understand the line of thinking that Saad was just some punchbag that soaked up punishment before mounting a comeback on a tiring opponent.
Me neither, he was much more talented than he is made it to be by many folks. Matt could box very well when he set his mind to it, his main flaw was that he could easily be lured into a brawl which would make him throw his boxing skills out the window.
That line of thinking usually comes from those who haven't watched a lick of him in action and are just repeating Forum BS they've heard from others of the same ilk. That goes on a lot around here. People claiming Monzon would jab Saad silly are just clueless. If anything Saad would be winning that battle, as he had one of the best jabs of any LHW I've seen.
Saad beat a gang of very good LHVys ,I dont see Monzon beating him,and Saad was a lot better boxer than generally given credit for ,but he sometimes strayed from the fight plan and got into a brawl .
The Saad that won the title from Johnson would be too strong and hard hitting ... a close decision win ...
