Matthews' performance is a classic example of the St. Paul style as modified by Jack Hurley. Even if you don't believe in the style, you can learn a lot of tricks by watching this fight.

I enjoyed watching Matthews. Nardico got home a few good punches, but for me Matthews dominated. I had Matthews winning 8 rounds and one could have given him the other two w/o being unfair. Matthews showed a lot. I don't like his carry the hands low to draw leads style, but he had Nardico missing by a mile most of the time and he showed every punch in the book. The down side was that Nardico managed to take his best punches. It is interesting to consider what would have happened in a Maxim-Matthews match. It would have been over 15, and Matthews never went beyond ten, so Maxim might have had a late rounds edge. On the other hand, Matthews went a strong ten, so that is not an open and shut conclusion. I liked the way Matthews went to the body. He looked to me to have a lot more offensive firepower than Maxim, and I think working the body would be a good way to attack Maxim's defense. I see the Maxim-Matthews fight as at least a toss-up, and I would give Matthews the slight edge going in. A fun fight. Thanks for posting.
