Nope, I believe this was leading up to the Floyd fight...you know, stone-throwing and all atsch In terms of your question, I simply think Matthysse is too sloppy on the inside; he sometimes smothers his work and leaves himself open. He's not a bad boxer-puncher, but Marquez would simply be too sharp. This is assuming he doesn't age dramatically overnight, and I don't think he'd fade enough so soon to let himself down against the style Lucas brings.
Having seen the adjustments and early problems marquez had against the likes of juan diaz don't you think that Matthyse is a more formidable opponent who could drag marquez into deep water very early. I was watching the Marquez V Fedchenko again and was thinking about how the fight with Matthyse could play out next year.
Well, no, for a few reasons. One is that Juan Diaz brought blistering hand speed and used smart pressure behind a jab and quick combinations to back up and smother Marquez along the perimeter of the ring early on. The pace is what forced Marquez to fight on Diaz's terms early on. Matthysse, while aggressive, does not provide the kind of voluminous intensity Diaz brought. He's a solid boxer-puncher who does well at mid-rang and on the inside, without making his transitions very blitz-like as Diaz did. A more similar comparison might be Katsidis, though Katsidis's swarming style relied much more on an inside fight, and after the 3rd round, Marquez barely got hit clean whether he was traversing the ring laterally or sitting down on his punches while slipping in the pocket. Fedchenko made JMM look awkward because of his odd spoiling tactics and sharp counter-punching ability, which forced Juan to look for openings while advancing in a way he's not used to doing. I won't say Matthysse isn't a threat, because he is; Marquez's most recent style as a shorter in-the-pocket counter-puncher makes him take more risks, and Lucas is a good strong fighter. It could happen. I just don't think it will.
Diaz required volume because he couldn't bust a grape in a fruit fight. Matthyse has 5x the fire power of Diaz, and does keep a high workrate. And comparing that bum Katsidis to Matthyse is a joke. Matthyse is a full light year above Kat in every facet. Matthyse would beat Marquez at this stage.
Matthysse does not throw in combination as fluidly as Diaz, nor does he have the hand-speed, nor the same quality of fundamentals boxing behind a jab. He also tends to punch a bit wider, which has huge repercussions against a fighter like Marquez. I like Matthysse a good deal, but did you not see him get tagged repeatedly by Ajose? The Katsidis that fought Marquez was no bum; there was a reason his style was able to get at Juan Manuel offensively in a way Pacquiao couldn't. Matthysse is more skilled boxer-puncher than Katsidis, but he doesn't have the same tendencies as a tight, smothering swarmer. And I don't see a huge gap in resume that suggests "light-years" between them. Stop reaching with stupid comparisons. If you pick Lucas because of his firepower and Marquez's age, go ahead, but to act like he's a clear cut above Juan Diaz or Michael Katsidis is foolish.
