There was no way it was ever the quit job it was made out to be. It had to be serious in a close fight which Matthysse still had every chance of winning.

Very true, and he can also choose, when it feel like someone has "popped" his eye, to not fight untill it feels 100% or quit if it doesn't. Much respect for Matthysse, never ducked a challenge, and he is smart enough to realise if he is risking long term damage.
