Apparantly it was...It was a really close fight, I think the kid did a good job and could have easily won the fight had he not spent the first 2-3 rounds doing essentially nothing. It blows my mind that he or any fighter would give away rounds and then ***** because they don't get a close decision. It was close, and the rounds Zab won he didn't look great, I concede that, but I don't condone the giving away of rounds, and it pisses me off that much more when a decision is close and people ***** about a robbery. If he cared that much he should have come out from the opening bell ready to fight, point blank. The kid impressed me, I think he's better than what he showed last night but he waited too long to get started, and didn't finish Zab when he had the chance...hopefully lesson learned.
That's what many people think, but it's bull****. There's such a thing as close but clear. There are close fights that clearly go to the wrong person. If someone clearly wins 7 rounds and loses, they're just as much robbed as someone who wins 12 rounds but loses. I'm not saying that's the case here (some of my Matthysse rounds are fluid, as I've said). People need to get off that mentality that close fights are never robberies, though. It's BULL****. Ten point must system, people. Who earned more rounds (or points, accounting for knockdowns and point deductions) is all that matters - it doesn't have to be a landslide victory for one person that isn't awarded for it to be incorrectly scored.
I agree if someone wins 7 absolutely crystal clear rounds and the other guy wins 5 clear rounds himself, then yes that was a clear winner and a robbery. In this fight there wasn't more than one absolutely clear round and it's ridiculous to see people say robbery.
Admittedly, Matthysse didn't have 7 crystal clear rounds. With the knockdown, however, it just seems difficult for me to reconcile scoring it for Judah (since in those rounds that aren't crystal clear it isn't like he firmly staked a flag in them either, and even though it's only a small part of scoring criteria he was virtually never the aggressor). To me it was one of those fights where momentum swung back and forth, and rounds were one in clusters (two clear ones for Judah, then four for Matthysse, then two again for Judah, and then four pretty clear ones for Matthysse).
Matthyse didn't have very many "clear win" rounds. There were too many close rounds to call this a robbery. I think the judges had it right. I think they would have "had it right" if they had scored it a Draw, or given it narrowly to Matthyse as well. It was just too close to call it one way or the other with certainty. If Matthyse had put heavy pressure on earlier in the fight he probably would have won the fight... he was stronger in there than Judah, but he didn't impose himself until very late in the fight.
I hat Matthysse up by a point or 2, can't remember, but I definitely don't think it was a ROBBERY. Not a great decision, but by no means a robbery. Tough fight to score, and I genuinely thought we'd get a draw, which I would have been satisfied with. I knew Zab would get the decision if it went to the cards. The judges didn't seem very experienced. At any rate, Zab sure as hell didn't look GOOD last night.
Watched this fight again today. This is how I scored it: Round 1: First round starts of with both guys throwing the jab as a range finder. Most of the round is spent feeling each other out. Judah gets off a good right hook and a straight left which gives him the round. 10-9 Judah Round 2: Both guys throw jabs in this round. Still not much happening. Mathysse is intent on throwing to the body, while Jab is throwing some jabs to the head. Not much connection in this round. This is a big swing round, maybe even a draw round. Last night I gave this to Mathysse, but this time I am giving this to Judah. I would have no argument on who you score this one for. 10-9 Judah Round 3: Mathysse starts keeping the distance that suits his type of fight in this round. Zab isn't doing anything this round really. Mathysse gets off some really good power shots to the body. Zab landed one good straight left at the end of this round, but Mathysse had like 10-15 solid power shots to the body this round. And yes, body shots count (this is directed to those people who only score head shots). 10-9 Mathysse Round 4: A lot of swinging and missing in the first minute. The jabs aren't landing for both guys. Mathysse starts working the body again. Zab gets a few jabs in. This round is basically Mathysse's body shots versus Zab's jab. I would take those harder body shots over those harmless jabs. 10-9 Mathysse Round 5: Judah got the right hooks going this round. He landed some good right hooks, one in particular that got the crowd excited for a minute. Mathysse landed a right that got the blood flowing on Judah's eye. But this was a Zab round because he gets a few more right hooks and a left cross in. 10-9 Judah Round 6: The first 1:50 of this round there is not much happening. Judah throws some jabs for the sake of throwing them, instead of landing them. Mathysse did nothing. The second 1:50 of this is where Mathysse totally takes over the round. Mathysse landed a good left hook, some rights to the head, and continued the bodywork. Note: Mathysse is starting to go to the head more now, as must have been their plan. Easier round to score. 10-9 Mathysse At the halfway point it is pretty much Mathysse's body punches vs Judah's jabs and some power shots to the head. I have it 3-3, and so does Lederman. Round 7: Mathysse has started to go for the head now (after doing all the bodywork earlier). Zab gets in a good counter left. Zab just throws jabs this round. Good upstairs right from Mathysse. Close round. 10-9 Judah Round 8: Judah hits him with some great left hands in the first minute. The next minute there aren't many landed punches except for one good left hand from Zab. Last minute is mostly Mathysse pressuring him but landing nothing. Zab gets some jabs in that last minute. Clear round for Zab. 10-9 Judah Round 9: Mathysse comes out looking to put pressure on. Zab has to duck low and make him miss. Mathysse catches Judah with a good right on the ropes. Mathysse really is pressuring him this round. He is putting his foot down. At times he is just mauling Zab. Some great right hands and a left hook from Mathysse. Easiest round to score so far in this fight. 10-9 Mathysse Round 10: Mathysse comes in looking like he wants to knock him out this round. Zab is running around for his life. Some great right hands from Mathysse. Right from Mathysse knocks Judah down. Judah gets up and tries to fight back with a couple of shots. But Mathysse is too strong and he lands some rights and a great left hook. Easy round to score. 10-8 Mathysse Round 11: Mathysse comes out like a man on a mission and hits him with a great right. Zab starts running around for dear life while Mathysse chases him and lands some rights. At one point Judah lands a combination, but this is a dominant round for Mathyyse. Judah got whooped in that round. 10-9 Mathysse (People that like scoring a dominant round 10-8 could have had this one as such) Round 12: Mathysse comes out continuing to pressure Judah and lands right hands near the ropes. Judah looks gassed and on the defense. All the punches are coming from Mathysse. Judah has a couple of moments where he lands some counters, but still this is a Mathysse round so far. Mathysse ends the round with some great combinations when Judah is on the ropes. 10-9 Mathysse That makes it 115-112 for Mathysse. This was a CLEAR win for Mathysse. Lederman gave round 9 to Judah
you're also forgetting the fact that kotelnik has more boxing skills in his pinky finger then matthyse does in his entire body. so comparing the two is ridiculous since neither fight anything like eachother and the former being much more skilled. and what difference would it hav made if he punched harder? urango is a harder puncher and looked what happened to him when he fought alexander, so whats your point?? and corley is a grizzled cagey veteran that can give anyone fits, why exactly are you comparing matthyse to these fighters and using these performances as an indication he has a chance??
Let me just re-post this, because after the last post it just reminds me of why it's such bad form to re-score fights. Judges watch fights one time, not twice, if they did I think quite a few fights would be scored different, but again they don't, so we shouldn't take a second viewing into account. You erase the drama from a fight by knowing an outcome, especially on a close decision, and you are going to score it different than you might watching live. Live is all that matters.
Don't feel bad for the guy, he has only himself to blame, not the judges. He didn't have to do a whole helluva lot more to cleanly win that fight.
