Matvey Korobov is a 5'11.5 33 year old Middleweight with a 24-1 14 KO's 1 KO loss. Born in Orotukan, Russia and fighting out of Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA. One of the best amateurs of the last 15 years who stopped Jacobs, Sillakh, Fletcher and easily beat Usyk, Kovalev, Despaigne, Derevyanchenko, Blanco and Gaydarbektov who defeated GGG in the ams. He was Russian National Champion in 2003 and 2004 he won gold medals at the 2005 and 2007 World Championships, the 2005 World Cup, and the 2006 European Championships, when he turned pro he had an amateur record of 300-12. He went to Moscow at 14 and his parents emigrated to the US he stayed behind to pursue his Boxing career and went without seeing his parents for a 10 year period during this period he also served two years in the Russian military. Unfortunately when he finally turned pro he had a really hard time adjusting his style, and took years to finally step up his competition, and when he did he faced a few rough spots, while he beat Derek Edwards by KO, the man who KO'd Badou Jack, and he almost KO'd Matt but thankfully he was able to compose himself and manage to be the only other guy aside from Adonis Stevenson to stop Edwards. Then he made his HBO debut and faced the underrated Jose Uzcategui and aside from a cut he dominated and took the 0 of the unbeaten Venezuelan. Later that year on a fateful day in December that was supposed to be his coming out party he stepped in the ring with Andy Lee and up until the sixth round Korobov was putting on a masterclass, controlling the range with his superior left jab and footwork, perfectly positioning himself to avoid the right hook and then in a split second that changed the trajectory of his career forever, he hurt Lee and made the terrible decision to square up in front of Lee to go for the KO, and that was the opening Lee had been looking for since the first round, and in that fleeting moment his life was changed. But what people tend to forget is that shot didn't put Korobov down, he was rocked to his core and did a stutter step it was truly a shot that would have KO'd anyone, yet he remained on his feet after the shot, and the barrage that followed, so he's anything but a glass jawed bum. So hopefully Korobov can get his career back on track, which won't be easy and get into a position to challenge for another title, because its far too soon to write such a stellar talent, who is one of the best pure boxers in the Middleweight division off. Even a defensive master like Rigondeaux was put down by Cordoba, Amagasa and Donaire.:deal Matt didn't go down, but he should have, maybe he'd still be undefeated to this day.

Terrific amatuer and a decent pro who still has enough time to make some noise in the pros.

Like the OP said, he has taken a while to adapt to the pros and he still has some work to do, but outside of GGG the MW division is pretty even with many good fighters like BJS, Lee, Jacobs, Quillin, Eubank Jr, Lemieux and potentially Canelo and Lara moving up. You also have on a lesser level, but still capable fighters in Ndam, Wade, Monroe Jr, Heilland and some others coming through. A few tweaks here and there and i wouldn't write Korobov off against any of these guys. He might not win them all, but he has the skills and solid enough power to cause all of them trouble.

Anyone know why he didn't chase the Lee rematch? Was there a rematch clause? He was winning the fight and got careless so it is not like he got dominated and a rematch would just be a hiding to nothing.

Good question, I've been wondering the same thing for a while now, unless the loss so mentally devastated him its taken him this long to process it, but I hope that's not the case and I doubt that it is, Korobov strikes me as a little tougher than that.

It was for a vacant title so I doubt there was a rematch clause

:patsch I'm officially sick of the word exposed at this point, losing to a superior boxer isn't being exposed, it just means that Golovkin is better, which no one is debating.

Hopefully TBA doesn't suck ass, he's talented enough to jump right back in the mix with a relatively stiff opponent.

Yes Korobov was so ''exposed'' by Golovkin he went on to achieve all this and finish with an amateur record of 301-10.

His CV is insane he went on something like a five year unbeaten run IIRC (his manager Cameron Dunkin said his loss against Bakhtiyar Artayev was his first in 5 years but I'll have to check to see if that's true) whilst competing in many major championships and other prestigious tournaments against the best in the world.
