Could the Manchester Hitman overcome the slippery Blocker who gave Lloyd Honeyghan a very close battle?
Blocker is a great guy. Always answered my questions when we both happened to be training at Fraziers. Gentleman. That being said I believe Hatton to be too physical for him and stops him.
I see Maurice being durable enough to last the distance with Hatton, going by his performance against Honeyghan.
Blocker was a good Welterweight. Beat a still tough Marlon Starling, a dangerous Glenwood Brown and gave a peak Honeyghan all the trouble he could handle. Was winning his unification versus Simon Brown who was a hell of a fighter. Hatton would never have beaten Starling or Brown and would have lots of problems with Glenwood who could really whack though he was easily outboxed. Would be a good fight but I think the 6 foot 2 Maurice would outbox the 5 foot 7 ish Hatton early on and I think could grab a close decision.
Blocker was about 6-3. He would use his reach to score points. Not try to do anything more than plie up pts. Clinch when necessary. It might be an ugly fight but Blocker had the right mindset, the right style to nullify Hatton.
Hatton's talent level is underrated by what he got out of it. He was really a special fighter. Blocker offered a difficult puzzle with his height and reach but he wasn't particularly durable or did he adjust well. I think a prime Hatton would pressure him and beat him, if not to a stoppage, then to a convincing decision. Hatton squandered his talent on booze, food and coke.
Blockers height and reach would be a big problem for Hatton to overcome, I don't see Ricky being able to get on the inside and Blockers 1-2 would keep him at bay. Blocker UD OR possible Late KO In this one.
Blocker wins by decision Hatton's best weight was Jr Welterweight he wouldn't have the physicality at Welterweight to deal with Blocker's height and reach.
I think you're forgetting Hatton spent 98 percent of his career at Jr Welterweight and this fight would be taking place at Welterweight where Hatton was not as effective at. And just one weightclass can make a considerable difference for example look at Chavez who i know your a fan of he was very effective at Jr Welterweight but far less effective at Welterweight.
Yeah, Hatton was shite at welter and dropped off massively from light welter, and even there he was only ever a good fighter in an all time sense. He couldn't even manhandle or effectively pressure Collazo who was a demonstrably weaker challenge than Blocker even if the southpaw aspect played it's part. Probably one of the worst fighters ever to nab a title at 147 relatively speaking, and Hatton lost imo. Blocker was a very good respectable welter, at least the version who really troubled Brown, Starling and Honeyghan, all of whom could physically put it about better than Hatton at 147 and still didn't especially bully Mo or exploit his gangly frame. Hatton might have the footspeed to get in range and sink the odd left to the ribs in, but he'd need a lot than that to take control. I love Ricky. A genuinely nice bloke who I watched live on plenty of occasions cheering like a madman. Gutted when he lost to that oik Floyd. But not a great fighter or special talent by a long shot even at his best weight.b Blocker has become very underrated because of the ill advised Norris fight and the resulting pasting against Trinidad when he was past his peak against physically far bigger and robust fighters with speed, power and offensive talent.
