Very plausible. I'll stick to what I have seen during the countless times I have watched this fight: Louis dominated Baer save for a brief exchange when Max backed Joe up; Louis turned the tables on Baer ; "the crowd is stunned by the fury of Louis's attack!" were the commentator's words.

Louis was brilliant in this fight; accurate, powerful and vicious. I think it is rather lame to decry this victory (I am not saying that you are). Louis was far too good for Baer. It's that simple.

It is well known that Louis had a prolapsed anus for this fight. I'll call it even.

This thread must be some kind of sick joke. Louis performance against Baer is one of the greatest in heavyweight history. It is certainly one of the top 5 greatest punching displays in ring history.

Exactly, and some of the **** talked about Louis does my head in! There still hasn't been a better combination puncher than Joe Louis, and as you say, this fight proves it.

Schmelling was past his best but not shot going into the rematch with Joe, riding a nice streak (including the ko over the previously unbeaten Louis who ko'd the Baer who ko'd Schmelling). Not everybody disagrees with you Frank, Johnson thought he was robotic and didn't like his footwork, but besides him your opinion as a fan is avalanched by those who have studied boxing for decades.

Joe IS a fantastic fighter, an ATG.

But c'mon, This is considered one of his best wins, and Max could not throw his best punch.

Of COURSE Joe is going to look fantastic. I am not saying Joe is not a great fighter, I just think he looked good against Baer because Baer could not fight him.

Baer was better than what he showed in this fight. I have sent the links, if Max was injured then this fight is tainted. No matter if Joe would have won anyway... Sadly, it does affect how I see this fight.

So do you give Marvin Hagler credit for beating Tommy Hearns?

Even if you removed this win from Louis's ledger, you shouldn't, why would this affect your ranking of him? He would still be champion for 11 years and still have made 25 title defenses and have lost prime years to the Second World War. He may very well have had 30 + defenses. He still would of beat, Sharkey, Carnera, Schmeling, Braddock, Walcott, Pastor, Farr, Lewis, Conn, Galento, Godoy etc etc etc

You are being overly harsh on Louis. It's a rumor, some say a sketchy one at that, and Joe looked absolutely fantastic in this fight. Baer had nothing for him. Maybe he gets lucky with a home run bomb but it's very unlikely the way the bomber looked on this fight.

Because Tommy Hearns broke his hand on Hagler's head? Exactly what I was thinking. I think that was an excuse, too.

Honestly if we were to lower the significance of Fighter A's win because Fighter B 'broke his hand', 'hurt his shoulder' or 'had the shits' half of the victories throughout boxing would lose stature.

    There is always an excuse.

It seems everyone agrees Max's hand was hurt, did he or Dempsey who was in his corner ever allude to this? I've never read it over the many years.

    Unforgiven:

Exactly, Hearns broke his hand during the fight, Baer came in with one.

Would you give Frazier as much credit for beating ALI, if Ali had come into the fight with a broken leg?

Take away a fighters best weapon, beat him, and then call it your greatest performance..... I just cant look at this fight the same anymore.

Louis is indeed still an ATG in my book, but I will drop him from 3rd to 5th in my rankings.

From third to fifth because of this startling (if even true) revelation about Baer?

Where the hell does Baer rank on your list then? Must be awful high to warrant such a demotion.

    Yeah.

I have Baer in my top 15

Your right though, I might be a little harsh.

    Right now

    1 Ali
    2 Marciano
    3 Foreman
    4 Dempsey
    5 Louis
