You mean the way prime Max Baer didn’t let Primo Carnera off the hook?

Primo was a bigger man for max to chop down compared to Liston. Six inches taller and 40lb heavier. Besides, Baer was clowning in that fight, and could afford to. Especially once it became apparent Carnera was hobbling on a bad ankle.

I thought he was only a couple of inches shorter than Primo myself

Yes you are correct about that. I was talking about primo being six inches taller and so many pounds heavier than Liston was. I have since edited my post.

He had him down 3 times in the first round, I think any heavyweight of a certain quality would have had Carnera out of there certainly inside 3 rounds.
Baer was shocking after the first round. It took him another 10 rounds, you talk about Wild he makes Wilder look like Joe Louis.

I don’t think that’s fair at all. It took joe Louis more than theee rounds to get rid of Primo. Are you saying Joe Louis was just any heavyweight of a certain quality? It took twice that duration for him to be rid of brave Primo.

You had to be a special kind of puncher to knockout Primo. Seems to me if you don’t like Primo, you don’t like Super heavyweights. If Charles Martin and Lucas Brown can become belt holders in this age I don’t see why Primo could not.

People knock him. But like all the great Superheavyweights it was not so much that Primo was good, it was that he was hard to beat. And not just big. He could box very well. There have been lots of threads about this, and after much evidence, the people who refused to be convinced ended up looking rather silly.

Under modern new York rules Max would have won the on three knockdown rule in the first round anyway.

Well you’ve turned this round to focus on Primo, I’m simply commenting on Baer’s performance in there after round 1, in my opinion it was shocking.
He was sloppy, his punching technique was all over the place.
Carnera was the better boxer in there, but his pitter patter arm punches were never going to be a problem for the granite jawed Baer.
I’m no modernist, but if that was being fought today for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world, we would seriously be debating the state of heavyweight boxing.

Ed Linn - Consider the facts. Primo Carnera was a muscle-bound glandular case with a glass jaw and a velvet punch; he became Heavyweight champion although in his entire career he won no more than a handful of fights on his own merits.

Baer's heart was never really into boxing. That was one of his biggest problems. He had plenty of raw talent and potential but never wet close to realizing it fully.

You can't see Liston's good defensive techniques on display? I shouldn't be surprised really.

Liston would be too much for Baer. At his best he could make it tough for Sonny for a while but Liston would finish over the top of him.

Go and place your vote in the Liston - Baer poll, he needs you.

Is Jack Dempsey going to have to get in Baer's face in the dressing room to make him come to the ring like he had to against Louis? (You can go out there and get knocked out like by Louis or get it right here for free!!?)

Neither was he six inches taller than Liston. Baer was a sloppy finisher with a telegraphed right hand .Chances are when he actually faces Sonny he quits like he did against Louis.

In the "instructional" video, Baer is actually losing his balance, falling all over the place while throwing power punches at slower-than-normal speed. Even moreso than he would in a ring. This is a true testament as to how amateurish Baer really is. A talented guy can "fake" his way through the punching mechanics if he goes fast enough. Speed patches holes. But when you ask him to slow down and break down each particular movement the talented guy, 99% of the time, starts doing the 3am Saturday Stagger while flailing his arms about. He just cant keep his footing.

    Liston was 6’0”. Carnera 6’6”.

Did Baer quit? I thought he was counted out.

Well that’s not the way Eddie Futch saw it. In an interview Eddie said his favourite game plan was the one executed by Braddock against Baer. It was his favourite because it described the perfect plan to offset what Max Baer wanted to do - who he described as a very clever fighter.
