Max Baer vs David Tua

Tua smashes him up. IMO he's got the better technique by miles.

Baer was a class or two above, and holds the stylistic advantage.

He would win, though it might be by decision!

Max’s power is crazy...but his defense is horrendous. I also think tuas chin was better. If I were betting I’d say tua.

 

I think Tua and his cement legs are in for a long night. He probably makes it to the finish line, but takes a real licking in there. The kind of beating that shortens careers.

 

That may or may not be true but I reckon even Earnies shots wouldn't ko Tua .David could def take a shot, I see Max off loading everything on to him but it's Tua that does the bombing.

 

This thread rather underscores how overrated Tua is.

Baer was simply a much better fighter, who beat much better fighters, and he had an enormous stylistic advantage.

This is a case of a short armed swarmed, trying to move into range against taller and ranger slugger.

To make matters worse for Tua, the bigger punchers that he fought, seemed to get his respect.

Sure Baer was inconsistent, but he sometimes beat the best of his era.

Tua just lost whenever he stepped up, and this does not strike me as a likely case for being the exception that proves the rule.

 

Let's line-up Tua against those breadline honkeys Baer had the privilege of knocking over and see how Tua's record looks.

 

We can't do that, so we have to judge him based on the ample opportunities that he got in his own era.

Personally I see more or less the same thing happening in the 30s.

He would be hailed as the second coming of Jack Dempsey, until he got schooled by Tommy Loughran, then the nature of the era would grind him down.

 

Tua could take shots off the best of them, but you could also get his respect.

Max was more willing to take shots to force the figth, and of course Tua would have to come to him.
