When Schmeling landed flush punches on Baer all night long to no effect, and when guys like Dustin Nichols and Sconiers dropped Wilder. I was going to mention that Wlad sent Wilder to bed early in sparring a few times, but Wlad could probably spark anybody with the right punch, pillow gloves or no.
First of all, amateur fights are automatically garbage in pro discussion. Biggs beat Tyson and look what happened when they became pros. Or how Greg Page and Tubbs squared off like 7-8 times and i believe Tubbs beat him like 90% o the time or something. Second, sparring matches and especially sparring rumours and hearsay are completely irrelevant without footage, and even then we can only take it with a grain of salt. Intense sparring like what we saw between canelo and golovkin are the exception, not the norm. Rarely is footage recorded and rarely do they go all out with a fight coming up. Third, schmeling was a great, smart, calculating fighter with a solid right hand but if i had to rate it on power compared to todays fighters itd be a 5 or 6 at best. Wladmir's right cross is a 9/10 bare minimum. Baer was also stopped not once, but twice by the 203 pound journeyman Lou Nova. Schmeling likewise was 6'1 and 189 lbs, he rarely ventured into the 200 pound range.
Firstly, here is Wilder's boxrec reflecting Sconiers and Nichols as fights on it: http://boxrec.com/pl/boxer/468841 Secondly if I were counting amateur experience then I'd have mentioned this fight against Krzysztof Zimnoch, where Wilder dances the Bambi twice before getting sat on his ass. With headgear on, LMAO: This content is protected Thirdly, the source for the sparring stories are Johnny Nelson, and I find it totally believable that Wlad tucked Wilder into bed and then fed him a birthday cake when he awoke, to say sorry. Fourth, Nova was a particularly heavy handed fellow but even he couldn't knock Baer out, who was stopped on cuts by the referee. Fifth, yes, Baer has a better chin than Wilder.
Title Bout Championship Boxing Prediction - Both in prime, both in Top Condition, 12 Rounds Round 1 - Wilder down early, he survives the round Round 2 - Both fighters hurt that round, with maybe Wilder edging it Round 3 - Wilder Round Round 4 - Big Wilder Round, had Baer hurt Round 5 - Big Baer round. Round 6 - Pretty Funny, the ref stops it with one second left in the round. Baer Wins My Opinion - Baer had a decent chin while Wilder's remains a mystery. They both are obviously huge punchers. Baer would easily be the best opponent Wilder has already fought. I know in another thread I said I tend to favor the huge modern day fighters but I think I think so little of Wilder that I would favor Baer. Either way, this probably isn't going long.
That sounds like an amazing fight! Can’t wait till we can see it for ourselves in the future with AI tools.
I am honestly beginning to wonder. The two mandatories that were very real threats to his position, got overturned because of failed drugs tests. He was either incredibly lucky, or incredibly unlucky. Perhaps his team did use their underhand tactics to remove them from the picture?
The guy in the Baer video was better than anyone Wilder has fought. How can Wilder survive the "vicious rabbit punch" inquiring minds would like to know. Wilder KO within 3. Yes, I said Wilder within 3.
Its obviously not a conspiracy, because these men had clearly done wrong. It is interesting that weak opponents rarely seem to fail these tests however. Is it perhaps that nobody cares, when the opponent is not a major threat?
C’mon J. Let’s put two an two together. Wilder is probably the most dangerous HW today. Why would the most dangerous HW, who seems more invested in boxing than both Ortiz and Povetkin, be the one who is scared? Have you seen Wilders take on the fights? He was heartbroken about Ortiz. Unless he’s also a broadway theater actor, he was clearly distraught at the missed opportunity. He said he almost wanted to quit, because it seemed like opportunities kept getting pulled from him in the last second. Look what he did to Stivern! Watch him in the ring. Does he look like a man afraid to fight a guy who is perhaps 48 years old with a heavy punch?
I just never got over how cautiously Wilder's team matched him. This has burned it into my brain that he is a knockout waiting to happen!
It just seems like not a lot of people want to fight him, but perhaps the truth is somewhere in the middle. I think Wilder would be vulnerable to Dempsey, Louis, and Marciano.
