That is the salient point. Baer would probably find some way to mess it up.

Even so with a punch like that you can never discount him. Tunney would never have tasted anything remotley like it outside of a shot Jack Dempsey.

    Tunney is favourite.

If Bare hits him properly he won't get back up though. You know?

BIG DEE HERE= Tunney UD over 10 ro 15 rds Baer`s only chance is to nail Tunney with a big one. Tunney only hit the canvas one time in his career and that came by one of the hardest punchers ever Jack Dempsey. Max Baer
though could land the big one from left field but not likely to do so as Tunney was one of the best defensively against punchers with long deliveries such as Baer. BAER WOULD FIND GENE TUNNEY`S LEFT JAB AS A PERMENANT FIXTURE
IN HIS FACE ALONG WITH THE FASTEST PAIR OF FEET NEXT TO A YOUNG ALI
IN HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSIP HISTORY TO MUCH TO OVER COME.
HE COULD EVEN STOP BAER ON CUTS BUT UNLIKELY AS BAER DIDN`T CUT
WELL AT ALL. BAER WAS NOT A BLEEDER.

the key is the the Tommy Loughran bout. Loughran was able to stick the jab in the face of Max Baer all night and Baer was helpless to do much about it.

Tunney is naturally bigger, harder puncher, and just as scientific.

I think Tunney stays away from the right hand and sticks that jab (in the immortal words of Lionel Richie) all night long.

BIG DEE HERE= Very good Langford as the Loughran fight is a perfect example of what it would take to beat Baer.
good post good thinking. Baer asked Loughran to teach him how to do that with his left hand to which Loughran replied
I`m not going to teach you that as I might have to fight you again. I`m not that stupid.

thanks dee. welcome to the board. I also remember reading that Baer was complaining to Jack Dempsey about the Loughran jab over a lunch and the older Dempsey backed away from the table and said "throw the jab at me" and when Baer did that, Dempsey through a left hook at Baers arm.
Baer asked "won't I get penalized for that" and Dempsey replied "first time will be a warning kid"

    Tunney, easily.

Gene Tunney was one of the greatest boxers ever, IMO.
    He'd outboxed almost anyone.

I would have to give it to the Fight Marine by UD or possible late stoppage
although i consider tunney more of a lightheavy

Max Baer was a clumsy Oaf.No Left Jab,no Left Hook, below average combos, below average foot work, the only thing he had going was the Right Hand, which would'nt land on Tunney. And even if it did Gene could shake it off the same way he shook off Dempseys' Blows.
