Max Baer vs Jack Sharkey: Interesting that these guys never fought each other, though they are of the same era, with Sharkey at the end of his career. (Joe Louis of course used both of them for cannon fodder).
I think it depends which version of sharkey get s in the ring with max. On his best day version he takes a unanimous Dec over him. On his worst erratic day baer pummells him to a tenth round ko.
At his best I pick Sharkey, the Baer that finally overwhelmed Schmeling might be too physical for Jack.Sharkey by close decision.
In the real timeline it is easy to imagine Sharkey picking off a green Baer, or Baer battering a faded Sharkey. Prime for prime it is hard to call. I go back and forth on it, but I am currently thinking that the Baer of the Schmeling fight might have been too much for any version of Sharkey.
It's one of those where Sharkey at his best could nick a decision or Baer could end it with overwhelming power. It's not a bout I'd want to bet on but, if forced, I'd lean towards Sharkey avoiding the fire and earning a thin verdict in his favor.
