Norton would have to outbox Baer to get the win. I think he could do this. I'm sure Baer would land some good punches and hurt Norton, maybe even drop him once or twice... but I think Norton wins by decision.
That's all he would need to be. The problem with Norton is that he didn't really try to outbox anybody. He imposed his physical superiority as far as size, strength and power is concerned with admittedly skillful methods and sometimes this paid off and sometimes it didn't.
Norton is the better overall fighter and realistically can take the decision. But Max has a puncher's chance here. And what a chance it is! The exciting scenario is Norton ahead on points when Baer connects with a big punch and finishes it. The drab scenario is Norton piles up the points over the course of the fight as Max mugs his way through. I would like to take the exciting scenario. Good match-up, anyway.
Max was one of the few heavyweight champions stylistically and temperamentally weirder than Ken. I think he'd retreat, getting Norton into his forward mobility preference to sucker him in, then without warning drop the boom like he did to Comiskey. Norton was predictable. Maxie wasn't. If Baer lets this thing go the limit, Kenny obviously wins. Given proper motivation and an opportunity to drop the bomb (and it could well come from a left hook, as King Levinski discovered in his exhibition with Max), he takes Norton out. I don't believe Ken had anything to hurt Baer with. The reverse clearly isn't true.
I really don't like Norton's chances, especially after how he fared against other huge punchers. Duodenum summed it up right.
Norton was as big as Baer in height and reach. He had a terrific jab, was a much better combination puncher and over all boxer .. They both were well conditioned at their best ... the big question is if Baer storms out and Norton freezes ... it's very possible .. If Max does not stop him fast I like Norton to tear him up pretty good but it's a huge question mark ..
I'll go with Norton in this one. Sure it's possible that Max could ko Ken but I don't think it's likely. Max had a big right hand but not much else whereas Ken was a good boxer with 2 good hands and used them both a lot during a fight. For Max to win it has to be by knockout and it has to be soon. He has to come out storming and looking to land a booming right hand....or rather a few booming right hands to put kenny on ***** street. The problem I see is that Max doesn't utilize a jab despite his reach and I can't remember seeing him use a good left hook or uppercut to go along with his right. Against Norton he would need those weapons. Throwing an occasional hard right won't cut it. It won't back Norton up enough to set up more powerful shots. That's the formula for beating Ken...you've got to back him up. Foreman hit him with right hands, jabs, hooks and uppercuts before stopping Norton. He didn't just wing a hard right every now and then the way Baer has a penchant for doing. A couple of earlier posts have Norton by decision after landing a lot and this is how I see it as well. If Baer fought the way Foreman or Cooney did against Norton then he has a good chance of stopping him but I don't see it. Norton by decision,
