Lets here how this one breaks down. Lennox is the better boxer with a less than stellar chin. Max Has that Iron Jaw , and vicious right hand. This Is a prime focused Baer . I see Lennox controlling the fight until he gets caught around the 3-4th rd. Baer has more one punch power than most other opponents that Lennox has faced. Vitali had Lennox beat if not for the unlucky cut that ended their match. Baer although smaller than Vitali, was quicker and had more one punch power. Vitali was on his way to winning the Lewis fight. Baer was likely to be nearly as busy as Vitali, and had the ability to KO Lennox with one punch. I see Baer knocking out Lewis in an upset.
Depends on how much Baer weighed plus his reach, Lewis was great at long range after Steward tutored him to straighten his punches. Do you think any of Lewis`s opponents stood a chance against Baer? I think Tua might have KO`ed him early.
Many of Lewis Opponents could Beat Baer. Tua would have a chance for sure. But I would have to say Baer could clown his way out of the infighting and perhaps hit Tua enough from the outside to win a decision.
Baer had iron in his whiskers. so I think he could take quite a few shots. Baer on the other hand was incredibly quick with his right, I think he catches Lewis and puts him down and out. He is faster than both McCall and Rahman. Lewis is better than Carnera but not as durable.
Every time Lewis gets matched with any historic hw with power the arguments against him are, he'll get caught at some point, or if he gets caught his out. I get it and obviously understand why. But it's too simplistic in my view. He got caught with 2 bombs when he clearly wasn't at his best mentally (in Rahman's case physically too) and had he's eye of the ball. But at his best and focused (which is how we should be judging him in a fantasy match up) he was rarely rocked or in trouble and he shipped a fair few. Yes it's his own fault that people have those doubts about him but at the same time look at how his chin held up the rest of the time. When focused Lewis is a monumental task for anyone in history. Point made. Saying all that Baer's power is top drawer and he poses a threat to most. I'm a fan. Max can definitely give Lewis some treacherous spots in the fight. The upset is a possibility But I see this with Lewis in boxer mode at long range, taking few risks with Baer (understandably) and probably putting on a clinic...to the displeasure of the crowd, and winning a UD.
It seems your whole post is based on Lewis at his worst against a highly focused Baer. Not very balanced is it? What about a highly focused Lewis? That version is pretty close to unbeatable. Edit: Vitali didn't have Old Lewis beat btw. He done well for 4 but was going downhill before the stoppage. That is another debate though lol
It's been said above but I'll say it again. If all it took to beat Lewis was a big punch he would have been beaten 20 times.
If it was enough to stop Lewis cos you had a big punch he'd have been out against mason, Ruddock, Bruno, tuA, etc. The only way Lewis loses is coming in sloppy, sticking a slow jab out and keeping his hands down low. Then there's a possibility that max cracks him to the canvas. But knowing that baer could hit, I see lennox playing the safe game for the first 5 round s, then starting to mix in the big overhand rights. Max will be caught more often until finally Lewis drops the big one and baer would hit the floor like a ton of bricks.
Yes Baer could score the upset, but I think that Lewis proved enough to be installed as the firm favorite here.
Great Post. The question then begs...when was Lennox in his prime? The Ruddock fight? Holyfield? Lennox was better technically and could outbox and measure Baer. I agree. But, watching Max a little more showed me that he had underrated speed. I think Lewis might get overconfident and get caught by Max and then he would have to survive....Lennox is the favorite for sure, IF he keeps to the plan you mention. I think Max surprises him in the first fight and wins, but a rematch would be all Lennox.
Baer was a savage in the ring! His sledgehammer punches against Lewis' eggshell chin? Gee, I WONDER what would happen. Lewis doesn't even really have a puncher's chance because Baer was as hard chinned as they came. If Lewis couldn't even drop Vitali (who has a chin like a soft boiled egg according to folks like Dino) then what's he going to do to the guy that faced Carnera's power punching and absolutely destroyed the giant who was even bigger than Lewis? Baer wins by KO in about 4!!!!! .... at least, that's the sort of crap we'd be reading in a Baer vs Wlad thread. Realistically, Lewis thumps Baer so hard his inner clown pops out and waves the white flag.
