Yep, you said you make Lennox the odds on favourite to win, then followed up with an argument that Max was in with a better chance than McCall or Rahman, presumably because you thought he was a greater fighter. Or maybe because he was a slugger/swarmer and the other two were swarmer/sluggers. I don't know. Enlighten me.
Good, bad - all of sort. We don't have most of these fights on the tape unfortunately but they existed. Let's not act like we don't have "oafish" ones in modern division by the way. Plenty of big, overweighed, uncoordinated boxers have success in today's HW boxing. Why? To be honest, I don't know. Maybe because boxing isn't as popular sport anymore? Maybe because at some point it's very hard to find good athletes among big guys? I'm far from a boxing expert but I know two things - humans didn't learn to hit much harder in 50 years (they don't have sturdier skulls either) and you don't need to be excellent athlete to excel in boxing in general.
I would feel on fairly safe ground saying that Baer took a punch better than Rahman, and was a more dangerous finisher than either McCall or Rahman. That would correspond to some sort of chance.
They have to think that, because as soon as they admit that he was quite good, their argument starts to unravel. You will not get any sort of objectivity out of them in the matter.
Tua, Vitali, Tyson, Mercer and Holyfield took a punch better than Rahman. Tyson, Mercer, Briggs, Holyfield, Tua and Morrison were more dangerous finishers than either man as well. Baer would have the same sort of chance anyone with two functional arms and legs would have. Would it be anything approaching a good chance? Hell no.
Primo just wasn't that good tho and it's echoed through history and we can all see him on film. We can see Baer too. As a matter of fact one of the great trainers of the day said Baer was a "frontrunner" and had a "heart the size of a pea". It wasn't in his general make up to be so critical either.
I have seen 6 but have seen the other matches from the other people and it's always the same pattern the skill level back then was bad I have no reason to put down that era its what's on video I dont like George or earnie from 70s style of fighting so that shows you it's not a bias thing but even though I dont like the style of those dudes doesn't mean I cant see they were way more better at movement and skill then Max's/Louis era it's obvious
I appreciate the Baer legend, his colorful manner, his good chin and big right hand .. he is remembered eighty five years past his prime for a number of reasons ... that said if were going best for best, Lewis was bigger, had a longer reach, was stronger, faster, had bigger two handed power, far more over all skill and better conditioning .. I see Lennox stoping him in under five rounds ..
Baer has almost no chance besides a punchers chance. He lost to multiple guys who were significantly smaller and far worse than Rahman and McCall Lewis would annihilate him zero difficulty
