I am not a big fan of these guys, but Carnera was the champion, after all. I wouldn't take most of the guys Lyle defeated over him, and I wonder if the powder puff punching Young, who had nothing to threaten Carnera, might well have gone the way of Loughran. Galento--post Louis--whom he had down. His next fight was the single biggest win of his career, the stoppage of Nova. He was coming off that victory when he fought Baer. Cobb--beat George Godfrey. I would consider that a better win than any Buster Mathis or Boone Kirkman had. Posters have listed names Lyle beat, but most were not very good (Mathis, Kirkman) or over the hill (Ellis, Bonavena). His big win was duplicating Ron Stander's stoppage of Shavers. *There are also a whole bunch of big fellows Baer ko'd, such as Hankinson and Comiskey, that I didn't name, but were in the same size class as Lyle. **back to Carnera. My take is that Shavers would have been a hellacious matchup for Primo who had chin issues. On the other hand, I think Quarry and especially Young would have lost to Carnera, who had the size, stamina, and enough clumsy skill to outpoint them.
Carnera was as good as Lyle. Lyle's claim to fame is getting knocked out by Ali and Foreman. He wouldn't do any better against Baer and Louis.
SHMO....I said unfortunately 2 of them were against the Irishmen...For the Quarry fight Lyle was prime but he was dominated. I went on say his best win was against Shavers but others duplicated the KO over Shavers at that time so while it was his(Lyle's) best win it was nothing extraordinary at the time...Against Cooney we all know he was old and an easy mark for Cooney, a left hook to the body and head sums up the whole fight. I did not think I had to mention his age in that one he was cannon fodder. Most of Lyles other wins were decisions, draw against Peralta and not always showing anything special...Baer had a few slumps but when he was fit he had some excellent power.....I like him over Lyle
Lyle was in prison for a long time and preserved but it is what it is. Do you want us to speculate if he did not go to prison and went strait into boxing...it may have been the prison that keep him in condition and motivated to fight or hardened him to fight.....you are so color conscious...as far as you saying he showed more grit than Baer I think not, I was at the Quarry fight and after Lyle got rocked badly he decided to sign the survival contract...and he did not get battered by a Joe Louis combination it was Jerry Quarry right hand...Still I seen Baer fight with swollen eyes and hit very hard but come back and try...don't know where you get your facts.
Why is there so little doubt over whether Baer had a better chin than Lyle? Certainly he never fought a puncher on the level of Shavers or Foreman and proved it. Louis destroyed him, Carnera hardly landed a punch, and Galento shouldn't even be mentioned in the same vein. Lyle was one of the toughest gamest mofos in the 70s, and and fought most of the hardest punching. To get up multiple times against Foreman is eye-opening (whatever you might think of Foreman's mental state at the time is irrelevant, he still punched as hard as before). To get up from that monster left that Shavers decked him with is just incredible. Lyle's chin, recuperative abilities and mental toughness don't really get enough credit.
It speaks for itself??? What does it say? He was easily outboxed and stopped by Frazier x2, Ali x2, and Norton. He was dropped by Patterson and many feel that the past prime former HW Champ should have went 2-0 vs. Quarry. They fought to a draw and a MD win for Quarry. Quarry did drop Patterson 3 times in their two fights. He lost a close fight to Jimmy Ellis
yea ron gave George the worst beating and was real tough for taking damage ron hit real hard to he drops the overrated no skilled max in 2nd round to win
