(The thread re Baer/Johnson made me think of this.) Two murderous punchers. 20 rounds at heavyweight.
My sentiments exactly. Baer would get totaly brutalised. It would make Louis Baer look like a village tea party. Max Baer vs Sam McVea might be interesting.
The problem with Maxie is you never knew which version of the Larruper would turn up,the terrific punching guy who brutalised Campbell and walked through Schmeling's right hands ,or the apathetic clown who chucked it against Louis. One thing to keep in mind is that Langford was not allways in top shape ,he sometimes came into fights carrying rather a lot of surplus, one of the reasons Fred Fulton and Gunboat Smith managed to "trombone" him to wins.Baer lacked the allround game to decision Langford ,imo,he would have to mstop him with his overhand right ,Langfords 5 7 height might work to his advantage with the 6 21/2 Baer missing the target with his right hand bombs.Langford for me.
With all respect to Max, a terrific character and a hell of a slugger, he is no where in Langford's league ... Sam would flatten him ...
Depends on which version of each fighter showed up IMO, as consistency wasn't necessarily either of these guys' strong points. If either shows up on an off day, the other would win. Langford had a bit more consistency, so I'll go with him more often than not.
Langford was inconsistent because of the frequency he fought against top fighters and the conditions he fought under. Baer was inconsistent because of his poor work ethic. Dont even mention them in the same sentence in this regard.
Is it purely style wise for you thinking it'd be that much of an outclassing if Baer fought Langford, but a good matchup vs Mcvea? I'm just curious because McVea fought Langford a ton, and generally put up a good match with him in winning a few times and also beat prime Wills, who pretty much had Sam's number.
Langford wouldn't need to shift through the gears to out-do Baer, but he was not a fighter to hide behind the jab. With his short neck and long arms, Langford would comfortably get underneath Baer's desperate swings and punish him in combination. He'd keep gnawing away at the sizeable target until Maxie wilted mentally, and if necessary, physically. There's not much, if anything, Baer could do with Langford.
Give me Half a Million, I'd bet all of it on Langford. Baer would be ripped to shreds by The Boston Tar Baby. That would have been one of the biggest mismatches in boxing history had they fought.
