In a time when Boxing so desperately needs marketable fighters, just how huge a star could the 'Livermore Larruper' been if he had been fighting today? The guy had EVERYTHING....... He had style, charisma, looks, charm, and boy, he really could fight, too. Anyone who saw that joke Hollywood movie 'Cinderella Man' would've got the completely wrong impression of a man who in reality was warm, self deprecating and nothing like the moody braggart portrayed therein. Anyone interested can check out some good info at www.maxbaer.org or alternatively, there are a few uploaded clips on youtube, one of my favourites being [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VH9bdloBRGk&feature=PlayList&p=0DEF4CFB11D1458E&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=53[/ame] Hope y'all enjoy a bit of history!:thumbsup
That's really a quality interview. If Ididn't know it was in tyhe 30s or so I'd say it was done on HBO. Max Baer was a cool dude.
One time Max was the most famous and popular sports star in the world. Sportswriters wondered whether his name would be mentioned in the same breath as the greats of the game.... One thing I know-both Baer and Louis loved beating up on Galento.A lot of bad blood.
Exactly. Baer belongs not only among the hardest hitting HWs ever, but also among the best chins, right up there with the Chuvalos and the McCalls. He is my favorite historical HW, combines the things I value most in a fighter!
I read the book "Braddock" which was an amazing book, and Max Baer seemed like a cool guy in the book, nothing like the movie.
Next Level?? He was one of the best of his time , and beat a certain Max Schmeling before knocking out the Klitchko - Carnera. Yes he was beaten by louis , but that doesnt mean he wasnt top level.
It does matter how hittable you are, Iron chins aren't everything in boxing. You can still lose a boxing match even if you can walk through your opponents best shots... Which probably explains why Baer was outpointed multiple times.
Just ignore Tommy he is 17 years old and does not know Boxing. Baer is one of the very few Heavyweight Champions to have over 50 KO's in his career. And he fought in an era where you had to almost kill your opponent for the referee to stop the fight. It is not like today where a guy gets a bloody nose and the referee waves the fight off. Baer was a damn good fighter and would have been even better had he took Boxing more seriously.
