Floyd didn`t throw as many hooks at Ali as Cooper did, he stood off while Cooper was far more aggressive.

Foreman didn`t have Cooper`s hand speed and tyhe heat sapped the sharpness of his punches, the rope a dope wouldn`t have worked against all the great left hookers in history.

I'm talking about Patterson not finding Liston's hooks slow and underdone.

Ali would have simply changed tactics. He tried rope a dope on Lyle and it didn't work so he eventually came off the ropes and stepped his game up.

Pre-exile Ali didn't need to deploy rope a dope.

He stood right in front of him, Ali was moving all the time, Liston was extremely one dimentional.

I disagree Liston was one dimensional. Tyson is an example of one dimensional. Liston could fight off the front or back foot as he showed in his fight against Williams when he adapted beautifully midstream and took the fight away from him. He beat boxers like Machen and he creamed punchers as well. Not being able to handle the GOAT at his fastest when at a ripe age himself doesn't make him extremely one dimensional. Think of who the man is fighting. If he was badly outslicked by the likes of Machen we could have this conversation but he wasn't.

I'd have to watch it again but i don't remember Ali getting hit with hook after hook by Cooper as your "hit by so many hooks" implies.

Tyson was far more skilled than Liston.

Did you read what i wrote? We are talking "one dimensional".

Tyson can only fight one way regardless of being extremely skilled in it. Liston can fight both ways and is more versatile or as you coined it, less "one dimensional". It's not even a debate about who is better it is a debate about who is the more one dimensional one. It's Tyson.

Watch peak Liston and you will see him employ various defensive techniques seldom attributed to him. He can also sit back and counter when it suits. He also has all the punches and is a solid tactician in there.

Tyson just crams forward but i will grant it's a helluva strong dimension but he does have downsides. Liston is a far better busier guy in close who wouldn't get tied up as easily as Mike for starters.

Tyson was by no means one dimensional. He only became that way in the 90s.

How so? I don’t think he was more skilled. Different for sure but not more skilled. Liston had far better stamina better jab equal defense. He wasn’t as fast and his combos not as crisp but had Liston threw half the amount of punches he did throw like Tyson maybe he could have added some extra pop to those punches and combos.

Of course he was. What was he doing in the 80's? Dancing around outboxing people? Laying back counterpunching? Nah he was coming forward looking to knock people out which is the way he fights. Frazier and Marciano were the same. There were skillful within their own category but they were versatile overall. Boxing 101.

Him always coming forward does not mean he was one dimensional. He excelled in that style, with an awesome defense and offense.
Someone like Wilder is one-dimensional, not Tyson.
