    No he can't.

He doesn't have Braddock's durability, and he doesn't have the power to den't Baer.

If Johansen had Baer's chin, he would have beaten Paterson all three times.

My point went right over your head. The point is that Baer was comprehensively out-boxed by men far inferior to Patterson. Floyd also could change his style. He also never beat anyone as good as Floyd, and that includes Schmeling. ;)

If Patterson can turn boxer vs Moore, Ingo, Chuvalo,

Also, Patterson's chin gets a bad rep. It's not granite, but it was certainly better than Loughran's was at heavyweight.

I don't buy the myth that Baer was elite, but only ever on two nights.

It's true, but you used by far his worst fight where he looked comoletely disinterested and unfocused. Yoi could use Farr fight for example, because at least he tried then.
Schmeling was different obstacle than Patterson, I view them as comparable but Schmeling was better ;)
The problem is that he also lost to Ingo (and Ingo gave him hell in rematches), who wasn't stylistically as tough to beat for Patterson as Baer.

Moore didn't have the same huge physical advantages that Baer had and Chuvalo was just much worse.
It wasn't as bad as some believe, but I doubt it was strong enough to take Baer's shots.
He might be more durable than Loughran, but Tommy moved a lot and fought very defensive game. Patterson would go at Baer, like he did against Liston.
He was elite for more than two fights, but only these two (along with Levinsky III) are available to watch. Baer beat many good contenders in his prime, but most of his job was done before Braddock and we have more film of him after Braddock.

He has pretty good depth to be honest.

He was beating currently ranked contenders, over a few years.

This is not a guy who had one or two good wins!

On paper Max Baer’s chances of beating Liston’s best opponents look good. In reality however he’d probably lose to somebody. Someone mentioned Eddie Machen earlier in this thread and I can also see him being a potential problem for Baer. I also wouldn’t completely disregard Floyd Patterson’s chances though I wouldn’t likely favor him.

Max at his best would be too strong and hard hitting. I'd say peak Baer was better than Ingo.

Yeah, Max was inconsistent. In fact, I would not expect him to put together a winning run like Liston did. But I do think that in one off fights, if we're talking about peak Baer, he could defeat Liston's best opposition.

It’s a shame Baer was as distracted as he was (usually with women and partying). At his best he was a beast who was focused on his craft and winning the championship. Once he won however it was just about cashing in on that title more then defending it. That being said idk how he does against the likes of Machen or Foley. Think Patterson is in trouble. He for sure could win but not sure he beats them all. Baer V Williams would be fun

This isn't about Baer this time actually. The OP is just mad he's getting his butt handed to him by me, Cobra, and others in a Liston-Tyson thread so he's doing whatever he can to talk down Liston and downplay his accomplishments. Quite embarassing.

Williams - Baer is 50-50. I might just about favor Baer if he was at his absolute best, but more than likely he'd goof around. I'd favor Machen and Patterson over even the best Baer however.

I would doubt that. Ingo was NOT winning that 2nd fight under any circumstances.

Williams would probably go right at Baer like he did against Liston. Maxie was much more durable and he usually did better against opponents of his size. Unless Baer from the Braddock fight comes to the ring, I'd bet on Baer by KO and quite early.
Machen could do that, he was tricky fighter with right style to outbox Baer (although he could be also outworked with some KDs, like Farr in rematch).

Floyd'd have speed advantage, which is important against Baer but his style is not good to sustain beating from Maxie. I mean, Patterson would go right at Baer (he did that against Liston after all) and with physical disadvantage and lack of durability it wouldn't be pretty.

He'd knock Folley's block off if Folley tried to slug with him. Machen could do well if he boxed, but if Baer caught him cold like Ingo did, which is a real possibility, Baer by KO. Williams doesn't have the chin to withstand a slugfest with peak Baer. But it's fun while it lasts. Patterson could realistically out box Max, but Max's size and strength advantage+Max's punching power+Patterson's chin=Max has a high likelihood of winning via KO. I think peak Max>>>peak Ingo.

That's your opinion. I think I'm doing just fine. Plus, I thought we moved on to other things. Unless you want to continue to preach the gospel of Cleveland Williams. Go ahead and tell us how Williams would have smashed Max into the canvas like he would have done Rocky and then how if he had never been shot, he gives 1967 Ali an ATG battle of the ages that Ali has to reach deep down in his soul to win.

No you're getting systematically destroyed (as usual. I've actually yet to see you win an argument thus far).
If you thought we moved on then why did you make this thread just to downplay Liston's accomplishments . Sounds to me like you're still butthurt.
I already said I'd just about favor the best Baer over Williams. You seem to be arguing with yourself here.
Please show me where I said Williams gives Ali in "ATG battle" in which Ali his to "reach deep down in his soul to win". Don't bother looking, you won't find it.
