Max Baer would beat all of prime Liston's resume

Baer does absolutely nothing for me.
I get the fact he was a colourful character and charismatic.
As a fighter though I just see a crude operator who had a limited skill set and got by on a granite chin and big right hand.
Now I’m not the greatest technical expert on here having largely never fought and I try to find some nuances in his ability that I’m missing and other people can tell me are there, but I’m struggling.

 

I think the skill gap of fighters pre Louis and post Louis is huge. One reason is that there were not many black fighters getting a shot after Jack Johnson. Max Baer had power but his competition was very weak

 

Not sure how he would react when he saw Cleveland Williams take off his robe.Maybe he would have a melt down like he did against Louis?

Louis was great though, Cleveland was nothing special

 

Louis was 21 years old, in his second year as a pro.

 

I think Baer would get out boxed by several of Liston's victims--Folley, Machen, possibly even Roy Harris. He might get over a big right, but Machen especially had a solid chin.

My take is Baer could on his good nights beat all of Liston's opponents, but he would likely lose a lot more fights along the way than Liston did.

 

and ten times better than Williams ever was.

 

We are not disputing the respective abilities of Louis and Williams .I am just saying Baer may have froze against Williams as he did against Louis,you are welcome to disagree.

 

Yeah, I will disagree because Baer faced bigger and more imposing opponents than Williams and he didn't do that against them. He was used to fight against big men.

 

How many punchers like Williams did he face? How many did he defeat?
The bigger men Baer faced were ****.

 

Maybe you rate Williams significantly higher than me as a puncher, but he doesn't have the resume of elite puncher. I'd say he faced quite a few on comparable level.

Some of them were arguably better than Williams.

Pat Comiskey has comparable KO resume for starters.

Not most, a few Williams fans do though.

Primo Carnera has better KO record. So does Pat Comiskey. De Kuh has comparable KO to wins ratio. Hank Hankinson was worse fighter, but tremendous puncher. Galento as well.
