Before Max Baer killed Frankie Campbel he had a real mean streak and was prety focused. His record up to this point is a prety consistent one but with a propensity to loose fights by DQ for fouling. After the Campbel fight he took up smoking, lost focus, and started having repetative nightmares about the event. He wanted to give up boxing but there was a depresion on and he wasnt good at anything else. The death of Campel did a lot to destroy what focus he had as a fighter. So lets say that the reff does his job and rescues Campbel when Baer is landing on him at will against the ropes. Would Baers career have turned out any diferently and if so how?
i dont think it would turn out much different as he relied on his natural talent anyway so his skills wouldnt have improved IMO. I can see him defending his title abit more than losing it to Joe Louis
some fighters are never the same after doing this to some ... they almost get gun shy of their abilitys and get the idea of trying not to hurt people in their minds
Baer would have defeated Braddock, I believe. He sure as hell would have gotten to the title sooner than he did. I'd like to think, Joe Louis would have been correct, when he said (of Baer) "Had he been more serious, he could have been the greatest one of all."
